House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday did not commit to calling Congress back into session before the election after President Joe Biden pressed congressional leaders about potential funding shortfalls in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Translation: We don't want to help with the hurricane while it could possibly help Dems in the upcoming election.

Meanwhile people will die.

Democrats have already blew it on this one. You don't think a token payment of $750 hasn't left a bad impression on hurricane victims?

Please do remember Mayorkas is on record as saying that FEMA had enough money for the hurricane but may incur shortfalls afterwards. So where is the emergency?

If you don't think that the Democrats won't politize the hurricane to their own benefit, I have a bridge to sell you.

That 'token' payment is set up to automatically pay out for initial relief for people who need things like food. That was already in place before hurricane season and is meant as an immediate relief. It was designed to help before more relief can be sent.

What's the problem? Other than the propaganda (lies) spewed across conservative media about it?

But fire away and believe what you want while your politicians continue to politicise American lives.

This thread is all about politizing the hurricane relief that you started.

Wow, way to reverse cause and effect there.

Thread started to highlight Republicans denying hurricane relief efforts for political gain is somehow now politicising things?

Is this how your mind actually works?

From your link.

Johnson noted that before Congress went on recess, the day before Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, Congress appropriated $20 billion additional dollars to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to address immediate needs.

“Then after that, Congress always takes its the due approach of providing what is necessary,” he said. “Congress will provide. We will help people in these disaster-prone areas. It’s an appropriate role for the federal government, and you’ll have bipartisan support for that, and it’ll all happen in due time, and we’ll get that job done. There shouldn’t be any concern about that.”

Yeah, the same Johnson who just today or yesterday claimed that asking who won the 2020 election was a gotcha question.

That guy's totally a Bastion of honesty.

Get real you guys.  Do you know nothing about FEMA?  Have you never bothered to read anything about it? The $750 is an emergency payment for food clothes medicine and immediate help for victims.  It is not a settlement. They hand it to people cold wet and miserable to get dry and fed and taken care of in the first days of a disaster. Then they start arranging for longer term needs like hotels or temporary housing  And yes they have plenty of money to do their job.

But FEMA does not rebuild roads or power lines or sewers or water mains. They are disaster relief.  Rebuilding is going to cost hundreds of billions of dollars and Congress will have to appropriate that.

You can hate Democrats and the government all you want.  But you should at least know how it works.  Otherwise, you will always be a victim to somebody's con..

Jeez.  Are you aware at all or lost in your hate silo? There is another hurricane named Milton that looks like it is heading for Florida now.   If it hits Tampa, it will be a major emergency.  And, the hurricane season is not over. The death toll is still rising from Helene as bodies of the missing are found.  You seem too interested in blame and hate to bother even thinking of those people.  You are indeed a chip off the old block.  A certified, distorting the truth so it fits my needs, Trumper.

Dude, you can put me on ignore if you want, but you did not use to be this way.  Conservative yes, but that is no problem.

I was quite clear that is would be the perception of the payment that people will have after losing everything.

I posted what Mayorkas said so what is your problem? I also posted what Johnson said.

Maybe you should read the article that posted in the original OP.

I have not distorted any truth as I quoted what Mayorkas and Johnson has said. Take it up with them.

Ok. I apologize.  You were an innocent transmitter of fact.  I have no problem with Mayorkas saying the will need more money, as they certainly will.

If you are standing in front of what used to be your home wondering what to do, and a FEMA  rig pulls up and the guy gets out and says, "You probably don't have any cash and the banks and power are all down, so here is $750 dollars emergency money go get fed and warm and take care of your kids.  We will do the paperwork and settle up the rest of thee relief later when you are safe."   That doesn't seem so bad to me, I would be grateful for emergency help.  Unless someone told me they were ripping me off just to make me angry and get my vote.

When you think about it, why do you bother to repeat that?

Because it is human nature. Some will be grateful until the money runs out and others will be incensed with the paltry sum as in "Is that all we get?"

I'll add one more thing. Congress will be back in session before most of the people will ever receive the $750.00 to begin with.

We have proof in recent history.  Bush was told that Katrina was going to be truly catastrophic to the New Orleans area and his FEMA director began staging supplies for an immediate response.  In the hours, then days, after the storm, the mayor of New Orleans and the governor of Louisiana, both Democrats, did not follow policy by requesting the aid be moved in immediately and while such requests are usually automatic, the Federal government by tradition has waited for the state to make the request.  This little ploy allowed them to paint Bush as an uncaring, disconnected idiot.

Yes, and as usual, it isn't even subtle.  I guess some folks think it's fun to stir political hate over these things, then move on to the next one but the real people facing this looming catastrophe will be living a nightmare in the coming hours, then trying to survive the weeks and months afterward.  I wouldn't wish a Cat 5 storm on my worst enemy.

Nonsense. You don't even know what you're arguing about.

This is a type of assistance that you may be approved for soon after you apply, called Serious Needs Assistance. It is an upfront, flexible payment to help cover essential items like food, water, baby formula, breastfeeding supplies, medication and other emergency supplies. There are other forms of assistance that you may qualify for to receive and Serious Needs Assistance is an initial payment you may receive while FEMA assesses your eligibility for additional funds. As your application continues to be reviewed, you may still receive additional forms of assistance for other needs such as support for temporary housing, personal property and home repair costs. If you have questions about your disaster assistance application and what you qualify for, contact us at 1-800-621-3362 to speak with a FEMA representative in your language.

They're not waiting until after the election to receive the $750. You clearly didn't even know its purpose.

Apologies for providing information about your own country that you and others in this forum would otherwise be unaware of.

Serious Needs Assistance and Displacement Assistance are both funded after a completed inspection confirms eligibility.

You're in the UK and have absolutely no clue as to how long these application will take to process and neither do I, but having dealt with our government on more than one occasion I'd say I have a better realization of how long people will have to wait.

If you think that if they apply today and get it tomorrow, well they won't.
