Astronomers scour TRAPPIST-1 system for alien signals

I rather like the irony that the name of the system in which they are searching for evidence of communication also happens to be an order of monks whose founder believed in silence and limiting contact with the outside world.

It’s our first assumption to think that if there is other life forms in the universe they would communicate with the same technology we use. But if we had three Earths with humans on all three do you think all three would evolve into the discovery of the exact same technology? Communication might be different on all three. One could still be sending up smoke signals while the other uses plasma beams to form crop circles. And the third could be so advanced they just communicate telepathically who knows.

All fair points.  But we all gotta start somewhere.

Accidental signals could be any medium, any frequency.  But interstellar messages deliberately beamed to effect communication really ought to be at some galactically recognised 'standard'.  And of course: pre-contact - how ever can we agree a common standard?

That's why we (i.e. clever astrophysics boffins) transmit and search in specific frequencies, e.g. 1420 MHz, because those are universally constant and significant values.

http_clever_astrophysics_boffin_stuff.

They haven't found anything yet but it's still early days: a few decades of searching the tiniest fraction of the possible plausible targets.  And as a wise man once wrote: we all gotta start somewhere

Looks like something is going on with SETI and actual ET contact....but they won't fill us in until they are good and ready.

And perhaps communication delays could be an issue? Maybe not, somehting called "quantum tunneling" may fix that "little" issue:

But this is what they create in silence:

Let's hope they send a space ship packed to the brim to our planet.

As a 'signal' of course.

I hate F-ing social media and these fake bs clickbait news!  Thanks for posting that Grey.

The TRAPPIST-1 system has so many potential planets, so it makes sense they’d be looking there for signals
