One of the things that makes Old World archaeology so much easier than New World archaeology is the amount of jungle growth that takes place in Mesoamerica. So much is buried under layers and layers of thick undergrowth that it's been lost to time over a relatively short span. Soil acidity and climate take their toll too. That's why it's always cool to see an new find.

On the other hand, Old World Sites are frequently covered and disturbed by layer after layer of more recent civilizations.

Except in North America where 75-80% of the mounds were looted and destroyed before they were even studied.

Building a church on a former sacred site has been practiced since the beginning of Christianity.

On the other hand, if an actual entrance to the underworld was found under a church, say in Rome, or Salt Lake City, it would explain a lot.

I'd go with Salt Lake City. 😬

I once heard on Pine Ridge in the 90s that the Mormons were stocking nukes. 🤣

Nearly 50 ft underground near Mexico City?  Nope, too many chances for the ground to move and collapse all that stuff on my head.

Sadly, yes. We were idiots back in the day.

Not nukes. Just records. Those caves have perfect conditions for preserving old and ancient records. Keeps them from falling apart. Low humidity, etc.

We do that here too, TBH. Mexico City is a prime example. So is Quito, Ecuador. It seems humans love to settle in areas with the same basic geographic features.

I know. My Mini Me has Mormon ancestors. I'm being facetious.

They just love copying we Quakers though with historical record keeping. 😆

It's all about resources and the control of them.
