Abramelin Posted October 31 #1 Share Posted October 31 Dietary interventions with pistachios — a bioavailable source of the xanthophyll lutein — are efficacious in increasing macular pigment optical density (MPOD) in healthy adults, according to a new study from Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center. Lutein and zeaxanthin are dietary xanthophylls, a class of carotenoids most commonly found in vegetables and fruits, with green leafy vegetables being especially rich sources. These compounds cross the blood brain barrier and exclusively accumulate in the macular region of the human retina where they are referred to as macular pigment. Pistachios are the only nut that contain significant amounts of either lutein and zeaxanthin, but unlike eggs contain only lutein. https://www.sci.news/medicine/daily-consumption-pistachios-eye-health-13374.html
Bendy Demon Posted October 31 #2 Share Posted October 31 Mmm..love pistachios (and nuts in general) but they, like every other nut, is quite expensive so unfortunately no pistachios for me.

I eat nuts every day, and I am not rich. But maybe they're cheaper here in the Netherlands?

I'd love to have a stash of shelled nuts for the freezer and a bunch in-the-shell also but times have changed and the nuts my family used to get at Christmas time when I was little was fresh and cheap enough but now, unless you get the pre-chopped, most of the nuts-in-the-shell are old, stale and sometimes downright moldy. Pistachios are more popular so that does not appear to be an issue I suppose.

I always chose for the Californian ones.
