Outside the single market the UK economy is very vulnerable to global trade wars, especially between the US and Europe. A Trump win would damage the EU and destroy the UK.

Donald Trump has a flair for turning usually mundane or technocratic topics into powerful material for his presidential campaign.

“The most beautiful word in the dictionary is tariff, and it’s my favourite word,” he said earlier this month. “It’s more beautiful than love. It’s more beautiful than anything.”

The former, and potentially future, president of the US is proposing major new taxes on trade. He has not pinned down a precise trade policy, but has indicated he could slap a tax of 10pc or 20pc on everything imported from abroad, and a higher rate of 60pc on imports from China.

Such measures would have extremely serious consequences for the world economy. Britain would not be spared.

With just a week until the presidential election, Donald Trump’s close ally and major economic adviser Elon Musk is warning supporters to expect economic chaos, a crashing stock market and financial “hardship” — albeit “temporary” — if Trump wins.

It sounds so extreme that Trump fans must either wonder why he had been so foolish as to say the silent part out loud, or maybe hope that the whole story is made up — “fake news.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has pledged over $130 million toward Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, recently stated that a Trump victory could lead to "temporary hardship" for Americans. Musk, set to head a government efficiency commission under Trump, proposes deep budget cuts to reduce federal spending by trillions, highlighting his view that America needs to "live within its means." Musk defended this plan, describing it as a pathway to long-term prosperity, despite potential short-term economic challenges.

In a recent "Telephone Town Hall" on Musk’s platform, X (formerly Twitter), he suggested these cuts might not be well-received but stressed that both he and Trump see the need for broad financial reform. Musk referred to the concept of "everyone taking a haircut," indicating that all citizens might feel the impact of these fiscal adjustments. Trump’s plan, supported by Musk, envisions balancing the budget by cutting waste across departments rather than affecting popular programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Economic experts have expressed concern, noting that drastic reductions could potentially spike prices and reignite inflation, particularly if paired with Trump’s mass deportation plans and tariff policies.

They're reaching the level of hysteria.  If any of that chaos comes about, it will be due to their reactions to HIM, before he ever takes office.
