A large crowd of people were duped into lining the streets of Dublin for a Halloween parade that did not exist.

Spectators turned out in force to watch the apparent procession in the Irish capital on Thursday night – until they were told there had never been any plans for one to be held.

It came after a website posted a parade would be taking place in the city from 7pm. It appears the claims were then spread further on social media, including sites such as TikTok.

Irish police dispersed the crowd after appealing for those in the area to leave.

The owner of a Pakistan-based website which shared details of a non-existent Halloween parade in Dublin says it was "a mistake, it was a not a joke, it was not a scam".

The website's owner told BBC News NI: "We are highly embarrassed and ashamed and we are really sorry about it, that because of us people wasted their time and money."

People are sleep-walking themselves into ridiculous situations, not to mentions scams, by unconsciously trusting social media. We were once told, with good reason, not to believe everything you read in the newspapers. That warning should be magnified 100 times with regard to the internet. Remember the panic and mayhem that followed Orson Welles CBS broadcast of the War of the Worlds on radio on Halloween 1938. The potential is there for social media to unleash even worse on the unsuspecting sheeple who gullibly trust in it.

Kamala for President. Save us from the uneducated and uncritical simpletons of this world before it is too late.
