6.8 magnitude earthquake strikes off coast of eastern Cuba

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Cuba on Sunday, causing material damage in several regions as the island continues to recover from widespread blackouts and the impact of two hurricanes over the past few weeks.

The earthquake was reported about 39 km (24 miles) south of Bartolomé Masó before noon local time, about an hour after a 5.9 magnitude quake rocked the area, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

“There have been landslides, damage to homes and power lines,” Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said, adding that authorities are evaluating the situation to start recovery efforts.

Pictures of Granma Province published by the state-run outlet Cubadebate showed buildings with cracks on the walls and piles of debris littering the ground.

Shaking felt in Florida after powerful earthquakes strike off Cuba’s coast

Residents in Florida reported feeling the ground move after two powerful earthquakes struck off the coast of Cuba late Sunday morning, prompting brief fears that a tsunami could impact areas closest to the epicenter in the Caribbean.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the two earthquakes were reported within an hour of each other.

The first was a magnitude 5.9 that was reported just before 11 a.m. ET approximately 22 miles south of Bartolomé Masó, Cuba, at a depth of about 9 miles.

The NWS National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, said there was no tsunami danger for the U.S. East Coast, the Gulf of Mexico or the eastern coast of Canada.

This comes right after the hit they took Wednesday by Hurricane Rafael.

Cuba Hit By Major Earthquake As Island Battles Storm Aftermath

While no major injuries or significant structural damage were immediately reported, the earthquake sent anxious residents fleeing into the streets.

In the small town of Pilon, residents shared social media images showing minor structural damage, including cracked walls and crumbling roofs—issues that are particularly concerning given Cuba's aging infrastructure, much of which requires substantial repairs.

The earthquake comes at a particularly challenging time for Cuba. Just days earlier, Category 3 Hurricane Rafael devastated the western portion of the island, forcing hundreds of thousands of residents to evacuate and leaving much of the country without power. The destruction was extensive, with hundreds of homes destroyed and widespread power outages continuing days after the storm's passage.

No. Not even for Florida or the Gulf of Mexico. The Carribean Islands either.

It's a shallow EQ on a strike-slip boundary, so there shouldn't be much of the vertical displacement that would drive a tsunami. Contrast that with convergent boundaries such as in the PNW or Japan.
