WVK Posted November 13 #1 Share Posted November 13 A Yale-affiliated psychiatrist encouraged LGBTQ+ people whose family members voted for Donald Trump to cut ties and shun their relatives over the upcoming holidays — as fallout from the election reached hysteria on left-leaning MSNBC. Yale University child psychiatry fellow Dr. Amanda Calhoun dug into the issue of the post-election crises in the LGBTQ+ community with MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Friday night. “There is a societal push that, if somebody is your family, they are entitled to your time. And I think the answer is absolutely not,” Calhoun said in a clip shared online. https://nypost.com/2024/11/09/us-news/yale-psychiatrist-urges-msnbc-viewers-to-avoid-trump-voting-family-members-over-the-holidays/
itsnotoutthere Posted November 13 #2 Share Posted November 13 (edited) I think this speaks volumes about the psychiatrist & psychiatry in general. All joking aside, I really do think that the main stream medias constant negative reporting & wild stories about Trump has mentally affected some people. I wouldn't be at all surprised if suicides have occurred as a result of it. Also I can't imagine the sort of venom exhibited by some elements of the media & Harris supporters against Trump voters being matched by Republicans had the vote gone the other way. Psychology and psychiatry have long been in the crosshairs of hard science; no joking necessary. Such statements are terribly ironic, if not ominous. She's a child psychiatrist and ostensible adult: if she's making such obviously maladjusted statements on-air with little to no self-awareness, what is she doing to her patients? 6
Edumakated Posted November 13 #4 Share Posted November 13 The thing is there is no shortage of these deranged nuts. They are literally all over MSNBC and other outlets having mental breakdowns. TDS is real.

Exactly. No way in the world would I drop a friend or family member over their voting preference, that is literally insane. I saw a video of a middle aged woman saying that she would no longer help her elderly parents, including taking them to hospital appointments because they voted for Trump. Absolute madness. That's not the only incident either. On YouTube I saw many Trump supporters or people that voted for Trump sad, depressed and in tears, because they had been ostracized from their own families for voting for Trump. Married couples are getting divorced and unmarried couples are splitting up. And Jesse Waters on Fox news said his own mother didn't invite him for Thanksgiving like she usually does. She has apparently disowned him because he supports Trump and Trump won. Even I don't like what the man says sometimes, but I think that's extreme for his own mother to act like that. I think this type of treatment and blaming family members is catching on and is only going to get worse. I couldn't do that to my husband and his family, and I won't, ever. That is just taking things too far over politics.
+OverSword Posted November 13 #10 Share Posted November 13 (edited) Shunning your family because of politics. What could be healthier? Can someone make me an appointment with this genius? Have you ever noticed that many people attracted to psychology are in dire need of treatment? Edited November 13 by OverSword

Actually, that is what draws some people into those jobs. Psychiatrist and therapist. They had their own issues first before they overcame them and then decided to help others from their own experiences. I know, I know, you will probably say some apparently have not gotten over their own issues. But I doubt most of them act and think like this psychiatrist. Some of them are not concerned with politics.

Yes, I've read about that happening at least once with this one therapist in the news. He was proven guilty and convicted of child molestation and abuse. I never understood how someone that has been background checked by the FBI, with a clean record no criminal or bad behavior history, before they were hired, just starts doing that out of the blue one day. It makes no sense. Edited November 13 by Katniss

Politics has been disrupting family holidays and starting fights for several years. It's not just one sided. I know people from both sides of the aisle that fight with family members during the holidays. Sometimes police have had to respond. For a long time it's been recommended that you avoid discussing politics at family gatherings. I know a couple who are devote Republicans who will fight with people anytime they go to their house. I don't blame just one but this shrink needs to stop. People, and I mean everyone, needs to leave politics out of what should be a happy family celebration. Yes. I know my family would tend to just move on if someone said something about politics. Religion was never a problem as we have both protestants and catholics in the family. They can't live without football but that doesn't escalate fights like politics do in some families I know.
