How would further destabilisation of Syria influence the Russian war on Ukraine?

Seems to me an ally in need of support could stretch Russia’s resources, or risk damaging their standing as defenders of their alliance. Hezbolla being weakened may have played a part. How much of this is strategy?

If you’ve ever played someone at chess who is just way better than you, and then you realise you actually lost about 10 moves ago.

I get the impression that Russia is active in several countries. The implication is that Russia is not all that bothered about their little trouble in the Ukraine.

I also suspect that the Ukraine trouble is the result of Russia and their apparent opponents of the West colluding to create that conflict.

If so, I wonder what instructions Scholz gave Putin?

Speaking on Saturday, President Assad vowed to "defend [Syria's] stability and territorial integrity in the face of all terrorists and their backers".

"[The country] is capable, with the help of its allies and friends, of defeating and eliminating them, no matter how intense their terrorist attacks are," his office quoted him as saying.

with the help of its allies and friends…?providing they’re not too busy.

A US spokesperson said Syria's "reliance on Russia and Iran", along with its refusal to move forward with a 2015 UN Security Council peace plan, had "created the conditions now unfolding" in the country.

LOL, defending Syria's stability is a bit like defending Christina Aguilera's virginity.

Russia is already over-extended.

Ukraine has lost the ability to attack and just defends these days. With Trump just weeks away from power, any disruption to weapon supplies will just fuel Russian aggression and with Syria falling outta its grip it’s just a matter of time before Putin takes out his anger on Ukraine.

Assad has fled the country and the rebels have now taken control. This of course weakens Putin's positioning in that region. He had worked diligently to maintain a small presence there. Much like Wagner, he sought to leverage Hezbollah and Hamas to act as destabilizers in the region. His steadfast partnership with Iran further highlights this.

@Slugnutty your perceptions are correct in that Russian proxy forces are actively working in various areas of the world. Notably they are conducting destabilization operations in select African countries. The problem for Putin now is, his allies have already shown their limitations of influence and he's been way out over his skis in the Ukraine.

Assuming trump listens to any of the actual experts and backs Ukraine/europe (and realises he can’t fix this in 24rs, the loon) I reckon 2025 could be the downfall year of Russia.

1 Russia stretched militarily

2 North Korean troops useless and a sign of desperation.

3 allies falling and Russian influence waning. Cant imagine china are very impressed.

4 russian economic decline creating conditions for uprisings

5 a big message from Syrian rebellion “look how quick it is to overthrow a dictator” (appreciate Russia isn’t quite the same as Syria)

Ukraine certainly aren’t winning, but Russia are hardly romping it.

Watch this space and remember where you heard it first.

Maybe I was wrong about some or all of this.

Iran will probably have to intervene directly in Syria to save the Assad regime.

That would mean war with Israel. I think the Iranians are kinda raw at the moment
