What is going now? North Korea Invasion?

It's time to protect our country, my people, my family.

It was really good to meet you guys.

No need to be concerned as I doubt North Korea would be stupid enough to invade. President Yoon is claiming that martial law is necessary to protect the country from North Korea's communist forces and to eliminate anti-state elements. Basically, he's accusing the opposition of anti-state activities, such as sympathizing with North Korea. It's a political move and I wonder how much it has do to with his own unpopularity and the scandals that he and his wife have been embroiled in.

Just saw this. Amazing.

Moving toward military dictatorship? Or just a circus sideshow?

I thought South Korea was crazy stable and not prone to such chaos.

Too bad GrimReaper/Manwan isnt around anymore. Could have had a first person report on this.

Haven't seen him since around August.

What an amateurish way to go about things. It just proves they're not the threat they think they are.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said on Tuesday evening he would move to lift a martial law declaration he had imposed just hours before, honoring a parliamentary vote against the measure.

The US and South Korean militaries said they are "in contact" after the martial law was declared, the Pentagon said on Tuesday.

Pentagon spokesperson Major General Patrick Ryder told a news briefing he also did not believe the martial law declaration had any significant impact so far on the roughly 28,500 US troops deployed to South Korea.

Apparently lawmakers have voted to block Yoon's move, after both the ruling party and opposition vowed to obstruct the declaration. Protests are also taking place outside Parliament.

Smells like a coup brewing.

Did he really think that there wouldn't be backlash for just declaring martial law for political purposes?  Huh, maybe Korea will be a preview for what happens here in the US come January.

Reading that does make me wonder.  If he could ship weapons successfully from California to North Korea in shipping containers, why can't he ship say a nuke or chemical weapons from North Korea to California....

Sounds kinda familiar though  , i have to say. Where have i heard stuff like this before? 🤔

A right-wing wannabe authoritarian president—a leader who attacks the press, is accused of abusing power for personal gain, uses his power to block investigations into his family’s potential corruption, hopes to stay in office to avoid heading to prison, and only seems to have concepts of a plan to address his nation’s inflation and health care

Yes, this seems to be the issue, and I am sorry that martial law has been imposed in democratic South Korea for covering up tracks while demonising the opposition in the process as being hand in hand with the perceived enemy as a convenient excuse.

I thought south korean democracy was healthier than that.

South Korea’s president, Yoon Suk Yeol, facing impeachment after martial law shock

South Korean opposition parties said they had submitted a motion to impeach the president, Yoon Suk Yeol, over his short-lived declaration of martial law. “We’ve submitted an impeachment motion prepared urgently,” representatives for six opposition parties including the main Democratic party said on Wednesday, adding they would discuss when to put it to a vote, but it could come as soon as Friday.

Looks like the whole Assembly is going to vote to impeach him. Serves him right I guess.

Ahh the beauty of a democractic government, the party commandeth and all* obey.

*almost all, as three members of the party did turn up to vote.

South Korea parliament votes to impeach president

South Korea's lawmakers have voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his attempt to impose martial law, following massive protests that gripped the country. A total of 204 MPs supported the motion, including some from Yoon's People Power Party (PPP).

Following days of public pressure the PPP had decided to let its lawmakers vote, after they stymied a previous effort to impeach Yoon last week by boycotting the vote. The joy was palpable as thousands of anti-Yoon protesters celebrated outside the National Assembly, with people singing along as fireworks broke out overhead.

South Korea’s impeached president, Yoon Suk Yeol, failed to appear before the country’s corruption watchdog on Wednesday, it said, after he was summoned for questioning over his attempt to impose martial law.

Yoon was stripped of his duties by parliament over the weekend after his short-lived 3 December martial law declaration, which plunged the country into its worst political turmoil in decades.

  • 2 weeks later...

A court in South Korea has issued an arrest warrant against suspended president Yoon Suk Yeol over his attempt to impose martial law on 3 December. The warrant comes after Yoon, who is being investigated for abusing his power and inciting an insurrection, ignored three summonses to appear for questioning over the past two weeks. Yoon's legal team has called the warrant "illegal and invalid" and said they would challenge it in court.

Interesting to note that someone in power can commit insurrection by overturning the government and giving themselves a different role.

Things are getting even more interesting:

A dawn stand-off, a human wall and a failed arrest: South Korea enters uncharted territory

The stand-off started long before dawn. By the time we arrived in the dark, an army of police had pushed back suspended president Yoon Suk Yeol's angry supporters, who'd camped out overnight hoping to stop his arrest. Some of those I spoke to were crying, others wailing, at what they feared was about to unfold.

As dawn broke, the first officers ran up to the house, but were instantly thwarted - blocked by a wall of soldiers protecting the compound. Reinforcements came, but could not help. The doors to Yoon's house stayed tightly sealed, his security team refusing the police officers entry.

Korea situation is getting worse.

If President Yoon arrested, then Korea would be chaotic.
