Why do medieval staircases usually go clockwise?

If you’ve ever visited a medieval castle – or read a book about them, or watched a TV show about them, or just have one of those friends who likes to come out with weird bits of trivia every now and then – then you’ll have heard this one before: the staircases in castles, it turns out, almost always ascend in a clockwise direction. And guess what? There’s apparently a really good reason for that.

So what is it?

I think it had to do with the superstitious belief that an anti-clockwise movement -widdershins -brought bad luck.

I have no idea why do medieval staircases usually go clockwise. But, when I think of the clockwise staircases my first association is Alfred Hitchcock's movie Vertigo.

I knew it was because of the battle hand in most people is the right. It's why Britains drive and pass each other on the right. If you pass someone on the road, it's on the side of your battle hand. Just in case you encounter someone with bad intentions.

That's exactly what i had been told.similar reason for people shaking hands is always the right hand..to show we are unarmed.
