On Thursday, TIME will announce the 2024 Person of the Year.

Since 1927, TIME has named a person, group, or concept that had the biggest impact—for good or for ill—on the world over the previous 12 months. In 2023, TIME selected pop superstar Taylor Swift as Person of the Year. Other previous selections include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the “spirit of Ukraine” in 2022, tech titan Elon Musk in 2021, the Ebola fighters in 2014, and former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2012 and 2008.

It should be Trump, hands down, but my guess is Sheinbaum in Mexico.

It’ll be Harris, with lots of snide allusions to “thst other person” and their racist sexism.

Harris sparked a great deal of outrage on social media with many claiming she should not be on the shortlist after having lost the election.

Can't blame them as losing the election was the only notable thing she appeared to have accomplished in 2024.

Biggest comeback in political history.  Won election in landslide despite the lawfare being leveled against him and three assassination attempts...

:o There was a third attempt, when?

I can't really see winning an election being particularly meaningful either.

My vote is probably someone not pictured in the article.

Spending 1.5 billion dollars in 60 days is pretty damn impressive!

That's Elon type spending right there 😆

The third attempt was by Melania after learning she'd have to move back to the White House.

Eh, with Edumakated in the Kitchen with a Candlestick.

JK.

I think he is counting the one Trump supporter who wanted to go to the rally in California armed and with a backstage pass.  But it turns out that the guy was just an armed Trump supporter with a backstage pass.

Yes maybe. A landslide at 49.8 % of the vote?  I too thought there were only two attempts.

Elon Musk.  Elon just bought controlling interest in the US for $250 million and is offering $100 million for GB.  If Elon buys control of Western Democracies, he will be a phenomenal figure indeed, unique in world history. He has $249.65 billion left to use. Trump could be just  one of his branch managers.

Maybe he and the Bad Orange Man can share it... :w00t:

Two things actually can be true at the same time.  He won a landslide victory in the Electoral College AND he managed to win the popular vote.  The first Republican since 2004 to do so.  Had Trump lost any of the battleground states, the Left might have an argument.  He didn't lose any of them.  IIRC, the Dems were raising hell in 2016 because he didn't win the popular vote.  Funny that... we didn't hear anything about ending the EC this time around.  Imagine that...

If Trump and Netanyahu can sort out Iran and all the other terror-related chaos in the Middle East, then I can see them sharing it in 2025.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't Biden and Harris collectively chosen at one point?

So Biden was anybody but Trump.  Was Trump anybody but Harris?

Frankly, most elections in most countries these days aren’t about supporting one side but rather punishing the other. “They’ve been in power too long” that sort of thing, or “I don’t like their politics/decisions/tie so I’m voting for the other party…”

No. Edit: Extended answer - arguably 2016 Trump was "anybody but Hilary", but that cannot be argued in 2024. Trump in 2024 was simply the better candidate (or the least bad candidate, at any rate).

I'd forgotten that.  Yes, they were chosen together in 2020.

Anybody but Harris?  If Trump had told people they pay tariffs and prices will go up, it would have been a little dicey.

No. Harris was the backup to Biden, you can't run for 117 days (or whatever ridiculously small number Harris ran for) and then claim that the race was about "anyone but her". Biden would have lost too (and if you believe 2020, he's the most popular president of all time with 81 million votes), so would that be "anyone but Biden or Harris"?
