Guyver Posted January 28 #226 Share Posted January 28 This thing with insurance has been destroying us for decades. Why? Like everything else…abuse. A woman spills her own cup of coffee from McDonald’s on her lap in the morning because she is old and has lost skill. She burns her genitalia, reportedly….a wound though painful…a person can recover from….and she did. But she sues and she wins tens of millions of dollars. What?! Her whole life was probably not even over a million in dollars earned….but she milks the system successfully. Who pays for that? People like you and me. Guyver Posted January 28 #227 Share Posted January 28 You know Las Vegas, ever been there? I have. Anyway…it is quite something. I used to be a sales manager for a company that owned Lysol. Vegas was my territory. The strip is really a thing, then there is a whole world that exists outside of the strip that no one thinks or knows about. Anyway…big city now. These hotels and casinos on the strip are so ridiculously hot it’s amazing. There is so much one can do there. I mean, you name it, you’ll find it. But, did you know how that city was built? It’s from people losing, not winning. Profit Margin. That is the term, and that is what rules the majority of the world.
Guyver Posted January 28 #228 Share Posted January 28 I understand that in a free market society, people need to have a profit to earn a living. And I am fine with that. That’s what should be. Yet, all these people complain on oil companies earning 5%, and I was literally in a new/used car lot today. You know the kinds of margins they are going for? It’s absolutely disgusting. I was offered $6500 for my Audi. What? I mean….there is making a living and then having to sleep at night. Can you image? You’re going to initially offer me $6500 then flex up to 8000, for a car that you literally don’t have to do anything to except for possibly replacing the windshield…so they say…and it sells for $14000 on the lot. What? Do some math. They give me 8 and sell it for 14 without doing anything. See what I’m talking about? Its called gouging.

I gotta ask, which is a better- Five $14,000.00 transactions at 150% profit margin or 1,400,000 $100 transactions at 5% profit margin? The margin isn't the issue, but rather the total profit over a period of time.

Her whole life was probably not even over a million in dollars earned….but she milks the system successfully. Who pays for that? People like you and me. That is not what happened with the woman and the spilled coffee. That particular McDonald's was selling coffee way above safe consumption for a while, they had well over 100 complaints and judicial orders to decrease the temperature of their coffee but ignored them all. The woman who spilled the coffee on herself, despite being clothed received 3rd degree burns over 16% of her body. Before going to court she did try to settle out of court but McDonald’s only offered her like a $25 gift card which lead her to take the matter to court. McDonald’s knew they essentially had zero chance of winning this court case given they had well over 100 previous complaints, warnings, and orders to decrease the temperature of their coffee so they decided to take a different route which was spending millions of dollars to run a smear campaign against this woman in the hopes that public pressure and humiliation would get her to drop the case but it didn't work but it was effective in that most people are unaware of the actual details of the event. In the trial the woman only wanted McDonald’s to cover her medical bills which if I remember was between $15,000 and $20,000, she was in the hospital for months and needed multiple skin graphs. How she ended up making millions was the judge fining McDonald’s punitively. If I remember correctly the punitive fine for the coffee was like a month of McDonald’s coffee sales. Even then the woman only took out what was needed to cover her medical, and now legal expenses, then donated the rest to charity. She didn't milk the system and McDonald’s was 100% guilty. As another aside the temperature of the coffee was very close to boiling water temperatures, it was no where close to safe human consumption.
