pellinore Posted January 15 #1 Share Posted January 15 (edited) Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump's pick for defence secretary in his upcoming presidency, cleared his first hurdle on the way to confirmation: a long - and at times tense - hearing before the US Senate's Armed Services Committee. For more than four hours on Tuesday, Hegseth faced questions about his ability to run the defence department, including its three million employees and $849bn (£695bn) budget. And although he was grilled by Democrats over accusations of sexual assault, infidelity and drinking in the workplace, he appears all but certain to be confirmed to the role after no Republicans came out against him. This was underscored later on Tuesday when Joni Ernst, one Republican who had been seen as a potential roadblock to his nomination, said she would support him. Here's a look at the five main takeaways from Hegseth's testimony. DarkHunter Posted January 15 #4 Share Posted January 15 To be fair in ASEAN itself there are ten countries currently in ASEAN (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) with two more about to join (East Timor and Papua New Guinea) but there is also ASEAN Plus Six which has the ten ASEAN nations plus China, South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and India. Also got the ongoing civil war in Myanmar which has caused some issues, Myanmar is still in ASEAN but they lost their turn at leadership and there are issues within ASEAN on what to do about Myanmar. Not knowing the exact current number in ASEAN and potentially mixing up ASEAN with ASEAN Plus Six isn't exactly a massive problem. Also just for the fun of it a Euler diagram of various Asian regional organization groups. There are a decent bit of various regional groups in Asia with overlapping membership. It seems this issue with ASEAN won't really have any impact on Hehseth getting appointed.

Hi Zebra He didn't humiliate anyone from what I saw in the OP video clip, he answered questions asked so not sure it was much different than a basic job interview. You are a funny guy. 1

Doc Socks Junior Posted January 15 #20 Share Posted January 15 33 minutes ago, OverSword said: Can you be specific about why he is a bad choice in your opinion? Poor handling of multiple organizations in a leadership position, bad record of keeping promises in his personal life, advocacy for war crimes, advocacy for forever wars. Lack of knowledge about core SecDef knowledge as came up during the hearings. I might not expect someone to know SE Asian specifics going in, but his opening statement specifically mentioned China and the Indo-Pacific. I think he makes a fine Fox TV host. Just not a serious SecDef. 3
