I'm sure I have interests that others wouldn't share, but who-the-f is taking time out of their day to make monkey suits and traipse around the woods.  I can't even fathom this being amusing when drunk; lots of effort and time consuming, and not safe, you'd be sober half-way up the mountain.

They do it to have fun fooling the gullible as well as getting views on their videos. Many people will expend a great deal of time, energy and money just to get clicks and views while laughing their buns off at people who sit, staring, slack-jawed at said video and excitedly proclaiming it is a real thing without actually examining the video.

Not any different than that blurry video form the 70's (I think) showing a supposed bigfoot walking through the woods.

There is money to be made off of the naive and gullible. Lots of it!

There's quite a few influencers and pranksters who make bank,  (Youtube) millions a year.
