Nicolette Posted February 4 #1 Share Posted February 4 Has anyone ever joined MENSA? Can you please tell me if you liked it, what you do there and what did you score? I took the practice test and it says "This high score indicates a strong possibility that you may qualify for membership in Mensa" which is kind of vague. I always wanted to join but didn't want to spend the $99 for the test and fail. Please let me know if you ever tried and if it was worth it! Ell Posted February 4 #2 Share Posted February 4 (edited) I am not smart enough to pass. I suspect, though, that a lot of astronomers and physicists could pass. However, I am sufficiently smart to know that a lot of their dearly held hypotheses are wrong. I also once heard a mensa member say something truly stupid. That is what I'm trying to find out here! I suspect a lot more people may qualify than think they can. The results of the practice test indicated that I should qualify, but my correct answers were below 98%, so I was wondering if they are scamming people into paying for the test that won't make it. However I did see a post on Reddit from someone who joined but scored lower. Wait now I finally see my error, I was aiming for 98% correct rather than above 98% of testers. Now that I found a chart it looks like nobody really gets it perfect. The $99 is to get someone come out to the college and give you their official iq test, if you don't have officially validated results to submit. Either way I couldn't find anybody I know who joined and I was really hoping there might be a member here that has and would be willing to share a little about their experience. What goes on there? What exactly are the perks of joining? What are the activities? Was it worth it to you?
iAlrakis Posted February 4 #5 Share Posted February 4 i'm considering to take the test. Just out of curiosity. And i've spent more money on useless things on the past so that's not a reason to not do it. 1

Have you ever taken an IQ test? If I remember correctly you seem pretty knowledgeable. I've wasted money on dumber things but I'm a single mom and a bit tighter on the funding since I just bought a house with a big commute. I was scared to throw it out there just for a test with a high chance of failure. At least you get an updated official iq score out of it. I did spend $10 on the practice test but I'm a little underwhelmed with the weasel wording on the results. A strong possibility is not a guarantee lol Edited February 4 by Nicolette
+OverSword Posted February 4 #7 Share Posted February 4 Years ago (early 80's) I took a Mensa test through a science magazine called Omni and did horribly on some sections. The part I remember thinking I was killing it but was actually blowing it was spatial recognition in which they showed strange shapes and had you guess what the shapes would look like inside out and inverted and things like that. 2

That's cool, was it in the magazine? Or how did you take it? Did they give you a score or tell you if you qualified?

In the early 2k's I took another IQ test which had me in the mid 130's but I seriously doubt the legitimacy of that random online test.
Sir Wearer of Hats Posted February 4 #10 Share Posted February 4 I’m as dumb as a sack of damp rocks but I suspect you’d find it to be full of exactly the sort of people you’d expect and none of the one’s you’d like (ie smug Karen’s and Kevin’s and not witty, informative Carls).

I generally scored between 155-200 on any of those older tests, but a chart of the results from the test I just tried would put me just below 130. Seems more realistic. Or maybe blunts and moonshine pickles aren't the best preparation method idk. I did already expect lower results due to things like dying from head trauma and coming back, smoking weed for 25 years, and currently having fibromyalgia fog. But I don't know how that works. I think you need to be over 130 to qualify? The more I look into it the more I can't tell whether the practice test indicated anything conclusive or not. Except that Mensa rated us both the same lol. I did see a statistic that about 1/2 of people that take the exam qualify. Sounds like good odds, unless people only take it because they already know they are good enough lol

Somehow I doubt that, are you still a teacher? Not that there aren't horrendously stupid teachers around here, but you are definitely in the Carl category. And that would be a shame if they are all Karens... There has got to be somebody on UM that has joined and can tell us what exactly they do there besides brag about being smart 😆

Ell Posted February 4 #14 Share Posted February 4 I have known several mensa members. I had no problem with them. A narcissist I knew had an IQ of 153, he once told me. Years before that, rather convinced - mistakenly - that I had a stupendous IQ and wanting to be seen by me as a bit of an equal, he lied to me that he had an IQ of 172. "That is one point higher than a friend of mine!" I responded, impressed. He was shocked when I told him that my IQ was rather low. "That is not possible!" he exclaimed, or something like that.

There may even be a cream for that. Just don't get too used to it, my kind words are very, very limited! You just have a proclivity for using your humor and wit to disengage the forum dramatics. You might not see it as intelligent but you demonstrate a high level of social awareness and cunning and I can tell you are great at your job. Your personality oozes of positive constructivity. As small a thing as that might sound like, to me it demonstrates wisdom in a world full of negative, destructive, dysfunctional, unteachable people chasing their own tails and digging holes for themselves.

Ya know most the narcissists I've met are actually pretty smart in a way. Idiots in another. Have you actually taken any tests? What do you consider low? Surely he recognized something about you that he admired. Also those test scores vary so much. I grew up knowing my number was 198... But now I see that is a pointless number because I am here afraid to spend the money because Im not sure if I can get 130 if I do. Comparison only works if your taking the same test. Am I the only one who thinks it would be fun if we all collectively took the same free test to see what happens? Maybe you are too modest, and maybe I spent my whole life being told I'm exceptional all the time just to turn out average. Only one way to find out! Anyways have any of your friends in Mensa told you anything about what they do? Seems so secretive lol the more I look into it the less I seem to know. While being in a club with bill gates isn't all that enticing, they all seem like pretty successful individuals... Might not be all that bad. 3 minutes ago, iAlrakis said: haven't done any IQ test, just some kind of prep test for Mensa and the results were promising Did you do the practice test? I tried the warmup and got 18/18 and took the practice test and it said the "high score, strong possibility" number, but there is a chart that correlates results to IQ which put my results around 125, below the 130 they say you need... So I am still worried that they are just trying to make a sale making people feel like they have a chance. I really hope someone comes along that took the full test to tell us more! I did find on google that they offer special interest hobby groups to participate in, one example was ancient cooking techniques. It does sound kind of fun, like the classes they offered for GATE. LightAngel Posted February 5 #24 Share Posted February 5 If you are really intelligent then you don't want to be a part of that kind of club. You will create your own reality, and you will make it work (and no, this isn't about money or fame). I am talking about real happiness - you know, the ability to create happiness in chaos. You will bleed and cry, but you will never give up on what you believe is right. I also think humor is a great part of it because laughing really is the best medicin (as corny as it may sound). It seemed to be too much of a high functioning Aspergers club for my liking, at least, my local chapter was. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Aspies, but the lack of social skills on display was more than I could be bothered with.
