What Trump's savage tariff trade war could mean for Australia

Aussies consumers could end up paying more for everyday goods, regardless of whether or not Donald Trump slaps tariffs on Australian products.

The new United States President has wasted little time fulfilling an election promise to impose the most punitive import taxes since 1930 - and he has used executive orders to go harder than he did the last time he was in the White House.

Canada and Mexico have been slapped with 25 per cent tariffs on goods coming into the US, either to bring back American manufacturing jobs or apply political pressure on border security.

China has been hit with 10 per cent tariffs, but they could rise even higher, given that Trump campaigned to inflict a 60 per cent tariff on Chinese goods.

The Australian government is hoping the fact the US has had a trade surplus with Australia, going back to 1952, means the second Trump administration will give Australia an exemption.

No ****, Sherlock.
Any chance to jack up prices (and therefore profits) will be seized by the corporations.
War in Ukraine? INCREASE VEGETABLE PRICES!

Bird flu? INCREASE EGG PRICES! INCREASE POUTRY PRODUCT PRICES!

UAE sneezes? INCREASE FUEL PRICES!

and as long as all the Big Names Who TOTALLY Do Not conspire together do it at the same time there’s no grounds for complaint via the toothless regulator!

G'day

No wuckin furries !

It will not happen immediately as all current  aussie pollies are already bought and paid for in the almighty US $dollar.  BUT....

IF Trump is silly enough.... ???? then since they USA seem to think they can seize Russian/ Iran others  assets and reserves then OZ only has to nationalise (Branded Ozzie) every Corporation and every USA asset held in OZ.  There is only 25 million of us so the share certificates will make all of us all on paper and real multi (big) millionaires.

We'll let them keep the money for submarines and F 35  paper planes already paid in advance, which they cannot deliver. Then use some of our new seized loot to buy Russian (or Chinese) alternatives which are OBVIOUSLY much higher quality anyway.... (when the skirmish in Ukraine is over, but there will be a huge line of countries so we best get in quick) BRIACS

Bring it on,  Orange man! 🙂.

Meh, if there is no local industry to protect the commodity will probably be eligible for concessional rates of duty anyway.

I strongly suspect that Trump's little tariff tantrum will blow over.

Trump's a Republican. Tariffs are bargaining chips, that's all. He's always happy to cut deal. Quid pro quo; give him something he wants and he'll make the tariffs go away.
