AG Pam Bondi orders DOJ to pause all funding for sanctuary cities

Quote

Newly inaugurated Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered the defunding of jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities Wednesday — potentially cutting off a significant money source for New York.

Bondi, 59, issued the edict shortly after being sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas at an Oval Office ceremony with President Trump in attendance.

“The Department of Justice will ensure that, consistent with law, ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’ do not receive access to Federal funds from the Department,” Bondi’s first-day memo says.

Cities and states that openly violate federal law should not only be denied funding but prosecuted also.

There's this little thing called the "Supremacy Clause"

Quote

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.

I am a strong advocate for state's rights pursuant to the Constitution but the Constitution also lays out the ground work even though it is kind of murky at best.

Looks like New York is going to be the first to be made an example.

The Justice Department announced Wednesday it was suing New York state over its policy of limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, with Gov. Kathy Hochul, state AG Letitia James and DMV chief Mark Schroeder in AG Pam Bondi’s crosshairs.

If NY backs down, or is broken in court, everyone else (Other than California) will likely find too.

Not seeing what grounds they would have.  Immigration is a federal responsibility not the state as per our constitution.

Interference I think. Refusal to share data, and refusal to cooperate with federal officers. Probably misdemeanors with a fine, but still. NY will probably gladly pay the fines. Problem being when you end up with thousands of judgements against, and paying hundreds of millions of dollars.

We'll have to see what happens.

When Trump said he would drain the swamp...this is the kind of thing he was talking about.  Looks like he is working hard to do exactly that.

It won't get to court. Haven't you heard? You can just ignore the judicial branch and do whatever you want.

Oh it will go to court, because Trump loves the Judiciary, when he thinks it is on his side.

Cops in a city might be most interested in crime in their cities.  If people in the city do not call police to report crimes,  law enforcement becomes more difficult.   If the police are a pipeline to ICE, some people just stop reporting crimes.  ICE and local police have two different goals.  Police are focused on protecting their city  enforcing national immigration laws is the job of ICE.  They could care less what crime rates are in the cities they raid. . They are not concerned with helping local police or making citizens safer.

I'd say not snitching out your neighbor as an illegal, and not allowing the ICE Feds to have violent offenders, are two different things.

I'm sure Trump intends to get every "illegal", but at the same time Jose working every day, quietly for under the table, is likely low on the list of "to do".

Yeah, I haven't seen a single raid here in Iowa.  We just had one guy arrested at the court house.

When a judge is telling an administration it doesn’t have the power that clearly outlined that they do….. That judge needs to be impeached.

This isn’t like when Biden ignored the Supreme Court on paying off student loans. This is a low level activist judge.
