Google Maps users in the U.S. will now see “Gulf of America” displayed over the body of water that was once labeled the “Gulf of Mexico.”

Users in Mexico will still see the name “Gulf of Mexico,” and users elsewhere in the world will see both names, written as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”

The change follows President Trump’s directive on Jan. 20, his first day in office, to rename the gulf to include America’s name. The executive order instructed the Department of the Interior to take all steps necessary to make the change official.

I knew the world had gone mad quite some time ago.

Google Maps Admits Deleting Critical ‘Gulf Of America’ Reviews

Google has tacitly admitted to removing negative reviews after changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on Google Maps. The company has also turned off the ability to suggest edits or report inaccuracies for the Gulf of America.

“We regularly put protections on places during times when we anticipate an uptick of contributions that are off-topic or unrelated to someone’s direct experience with the place,” a Google spokesperson told me in an email, directing me to a 2023 blog post about the company’s rules for “policy-violating content."

I suspect the best chance for that to increase will come after Israel attacks Iran's nuclear infrastructure.  They've threatened to respond by strangling the oil through the Straits of Hormuz.  The price would explode overnight and the only nation with oil that wouldn't get a piece will be Iran ;)

HI And Then

Trump may have renamed it but not likely he can drill anywhere he wants in the Gulf as very little of it is in American waters

I can't see a problem myself, Places, Regions Countries, Oceans and Seas have had their names changed many times over the centuries. A decree came down from a leader and the name changed. usually accepted because it was copied from one map to the next.

Many places have changed names from the time of the British Empire, so maybe i'm just use to these name changes.

Who gave the Gulf of Mexico it's name the Spanish?

Maybe you aren't aware of indigenous connections to lands taken from them.

When governments change indigenous names there's always backlash and anger. It's disrespectful.
