'Illegally dumped' feral pigs roaming Cairngorms park caught and killed

Feral pigs spotted on the loose in the Cairngorms National Park have been captured and humanely culled, Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) has said.

The Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) said earlier this week the pigs were "relatively domesticated" and appeared to have been illegally abandoned.

The group of animals was initially spotted about five miles away from where four lynx were dumped in the park before later being caught. FLS said eight pigs were captured.

However the culling of the pigs has caused outcry, with hundreds of people leaving comments on the BBC News website's Facebook page, expressing anger and accusing the authorities of animal cruelty.

Some people have questioned why the pigs were treated differently to four lynx that were recently found about five miles from where the pigs were discovered. They were caught and taken to a zoo.

Others have pointed to areas where feral pigs appear to roam freely.

Culling the pigs is a necessary evil.  If left to themselves in a world where their natural predators are no longer able to thrive, these pigs reproduce at a rapid rate and then begin wreaking havoc on the environment.  People may not know that when they go wild, they are dangerous and destructive.  The damage they can do to a farmers field overnight is remarkable.  A herd of wild pigs can make it look like an army of tanks just rolled over an area in just a few hours.  As a golfer who walks my local course for exercise, I often see the damage that wild pigs can do overnight to the fairways (thank God they stay off the greens for some reason) and it is extensive.  Texas has been struggling with this problem for a long time and even with hunters being encourage to shoot them, they still cannot be stopped.  Anyone remember Hogzilla?
