Things move fast in Washington - especially when the president is as easily distracted as Donald Trump.

Already we've learned the US envoy to the UK met with Keir Starmer this morning - during which time the PM spoke with Trump and discussed (but did not confirm a date for) Starmer heading over for a White House visit.

1. Trump says he'd love to have Putin back in the G7

Russia was booted out of the G8 (as it was then known) club of industralised democracies following the invasion of Crimea in 2014.

But even though he's invaded a bunch more places since then, and has shown no sign of remorse for doing so, Trump reckons it's time to let Putin off the naughty step. etc, etc

Somehow I don't think Trump want's a deal in Ukraine.

The EU would sideline any spending on NATO, the opposite of what he wants.

Trump also wants to sell more US arms to European NATO members, that will not happen without a significant threat.

And the EU NATO members can ignore China as a problem for them.

True but he wants the rare earths and petroleum, so he will keep selling Ukraine arms.  For the EU, Canada, and Mexico, China is not a threat but a trading partner with possibilities to increase trade in response to US tariffs.  You are in a better position than me to judge, but I think Europe is aware of the Putin threat.

I think Trump wants to trade rare earths for arms and military intelligence.

The Ukraine war is also degrading Russian assets and reducing their scope to interfere anywhere else.

They have already given up on Syria and its associated benefits.

Talk peace but keep bashing Putin is, I think, the game plan. The fact many take Trump comments at face value is not doing any harm either.

EU has enacted an escape clause in the EU budget limits for members to increase more on defence, but I don’t think they had NATO in mind. Looks like the EU is gonna go it alone

Well he’s now taken aim at Australian’s GST because it “taxes US products” which is “unfair”, on our property ownership laws (unfairly discriminates against foreigners, aka USAians), our Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme and our media landscape because we have laws about what percentage of our programming must be local content.

I'm interested to see how the MAGA fans in Europe (and the UK is part of Europe) are going to continue to support their hero while he undermines our economy and democracy. (And to suggest that what he says should not be believed means he should be accepted as a liar like the other right wing heroes, Farage and Johnson. We don't need liars in politics.)

Does this surprise you at all?  The Left/DC are going to come at him full bore for the entire four years, just like last time.  The difference this time is he hit the ground running and he has them on their back foot so to speak.  The guy that so many here think is losing his mental capacity seems to have learned quite a lot about how DC works and how to slow them down this time.  They'll likely never admit it but before this term is over, they're going to realize they should have left him alone.  Some people just make worse enemies than others

Trump won the first time he ran for POTUS - if you don't count the the time he ran for the Reform Party in 2000.

He had 4 years to put this together and he’s not playing any games. He’s starting from the core and ripping out the pockets of all these crooked politicians and government bureaucrats. They should have left him alone now their going to find out the difference between a sleeping bear and one wide awake. People from other countries should not be entering this country illegally and sucking up benefits paid for by hard working Americans tax money.
