How do mummies smell? Like pine, cedar, juniper, myrrh, and frankincense

Kittens Are Jerks

Recommended Posts

Ancient Egyptian mummies, preserved for millennia, continue to emit pleasant scents due to the aromatic resins and waxes used in their embalming, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Researchers from University College London (UCL) and the University of Ljubljana conducted the first systematic analysis of mummy aromatics, using both chemical analysis and trained human sniffers to assess the odors emitted by the mummies.

Interesting research but there are some smells we have tried to forget through out history and even traveling the world experiencing different cultures. People not wearing deodorant and the lack of waste water treatment isn’t something you can forget easily..
But while reading this and anytime I read articles on mummies I wonder how cruel it is to uproot the dead like this from their tombs. If there wasn’t something beyond special about this ancient civilization they wouldn’t be doing this after discovering their bodies. They would let them rest but instead they jerk them from their graves to study and never put them back.

I have worked with mummies when in college and i have pieces of some now. Mummy has a very distinct smell. Not unpleasant, like really really old unburned incense.
