The image where it looks like a vast deep hole is actually a poorly lit representation of tree cover.

It's an optical illusion of Vostok Island. They have trees that grow like 100' high and have very dense foliage, so it looks dark on images like on Google Earth. It wasn't hard to find this information when I Googled it.
