Blackleaf Posted June 13, 2005 #1 Share Posted June 13, 2005 Britain tops EU league for super-growth companies BRITAIN has the highest proportion of "super-growth" medium-sized companies in Europe and is ranked fourth in the world, according to research published today. Accountancy firm Grant Thornton said it had identified businesses with above-average turnover and head count growth from 6300 medium-sized companies, defined as those with between 50 and 249 staff, across 24 countries. A quarter of the UK's medium-sized companies were found to be super-growth, up from 20 per cent the previous year, and higher than the global average of 17 per cent. Although the vast majority of British companies are small businesses, employing less than 50 people each, medium-sized enterprises are a key element of a growing economy. Andrew Godfrey, Scottish managing partner at Grant Thornton, said: "Healthy consumer demand, low unemployment and a stable economy have all contributed to helping UK businesses capitalise on their ambitious growth targets, and combined with the poor performance of eurozone economies, it's no surprise that more fast-growing companies are located in the UK than in other EU states. "However, issues such as the rising administrative burden need to be urgently addressed if we are to compete on an equal footing with the fast-growing economies of Asia Pacific." The UK jumped to the top of the European league after overtaking Sweden, where the percentage of medium-sized companies defined as super-growth fell from 24 per cent to 13 per cent in the survey. Globally, the United States topped the list, with nearly half of medium-sized companies - 47 per cent - ranked as super-growth, up significantly on a second place ranking of 22 per cent in 2004. Hong Kong moved up into second place, leaping from eighth place to record 28 per cent of companies as super-growth. It was followed by Australia at 27 per cent, then the UK at 25 per cent. Jeez it's giving a bad name to the rest of us... I'm British and I don't go around boasting about the fact... I notice he never points out any of the bad bits of being British. Sheesh. Sheesh. 673388[/snapback] It's not only that he is pro-British - it's that he is anti-anyone-who-isn't-british-anglo-saxon. He attacked the Scots few weeks ago if I'm not mistaken, and had a go on my people about a month ago as well... I would have said he's anti-Semite back then, but he seem to be anti-anyone .
