Michelle Posted June 18, 2005 #52 Share Posted June 18, 2005 I'd like to find out where they take these polls because I've never been asked. It's difficult for me to comprehend how someone can be disliked for the simple reason that they were born. I try to always meet people with an open mind and would never assume that I knew their "kind" before learning something about them. I'm an American, and I can honestly say, I've met more Americans I don't like very well than any other nationality.

babayagafamiliar Posted June 19, 2005 #59 Share Posted June 19, 2005 With all the recent threads mentioning France and France's role in the EU, I decided to open a thread that can't go off topic unless you don't talk about the French or France, this can range from their contribution to WW2, to France's role in Europe today. Commence. P.S. please refrain from any use of offensive words and respect others' opinions . 673766 The French.... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Need to wash. Nice place to live (France). If your not American of course. I lived in Russia.

turbonium Posted June 19, 2005 #61 Share Posted June 19, 2005 If we can get serious for a moment, French military capability has always been a bit of an enigma; Napoleon was undeniably one of the greatest military geniuses of all time, but they were always outclassed by us (the Brits) at sea, but they held out on the Western front throughout WWI (although they came pretty close to mutiny at times, when we never came close), and in 1940 the French armed forces had equipment that was probably at least as good as the Germans, but were just completley outclassed by the German's tactics. I wonder how much of subsequent events and current attitudes comes down to resentment that we (Britain, America and Canada) did what they could not and defeated Nazism? 683978 You are right, the Brits always had the best Navy. The Napoleonic army, though, was the best of the time. The French generals made the huge tactical error of thinking in a WWI mindset, that the Maginot line was the way the Germans had to come to invade France. They were in shock when the new mobile armor quickly swept around the Line. It was the single most critical mistake of the war by the Allies. Hitler's was Dunkirk, but that is in doubt for other reasons....
turbonium Posted June 19, 2005 #62 Share Posted June 19, 2005 (edited) I don't think the French tried hard enough to fight the NAZIS. They gave up without a fight as soon as they were invaded. I know for a fact that if the NAZIS invaded Britain we would not have given up so easily. We had the Home Guard - not professional soldiers, but soldiers who would have fought the Germans if they managed to invade Britain. And Churchill even had plans to create the largest "undercover" army in Britain that the world had ever seen, which was members of the public trained to spy on German soldiers and to kill as many of them as they can. No other European country planned anything on that scale. And another reason why the French annoy me is their collaboration with the Germans in WWII. If you can't beat them, surrender and join them! Well, like I said, the Maginot Line fiasco was a major defeat to start with. After that, it was a political fiasco that resulted in France's easy surrender. The Gov't was worried about the Germans blowing up the Eiffel Tower, etc., so they raised the white flag like cowards. But the PEOPLE did not go along with this, by a long shot. They were disgusted with the traitorous Vichy regime, and thus the Free French (or French Underground) came to be. They were brave, courageous French who, despite their country having been usurped, and betrayed by their so-called "leaders", played a very important role in the success of the Allied victory. D-Day would have possibly ended in disaster without the intelligence reports, and sabotage of Nazi transportation, munition, and communication points. If you've ever read about post-war France, you will see photos of Frenchmen shaving the heads of those who betrayed the country and allied with the Nazis. Some of them were executed, as well.
