But they found no fires, or evidence of debris.Scientists said the phenomenon may have been caused by a falling meteorite, or by a piece of satellite that dropped out of orbit. Such occurrences are relatively common around the world, particularly at certain times of the year. Sotitis Spyridakis, the chairman of the village council at Zagori, near here, described the phenomenon as "a large luminous ball" trailing debris, which flew at low altitude over the village and disappeared over the horizon.
