nick_fury Posted July 16, 2005 #29 Share Posted July 16, 2005 lol It is truly ironic how divided the UNITED kingdom is. To be honest I agree with Patriot (for once ) we are stronger together as a group of nations. Splitting up the UK would just create a sense of hostility between us all

Blackleaf Posted July 17, 2005 Author #31 Share Posted July 17, 2005 (edited) I think someone must have wrote this for the poor man, cause it makes sense Back to being serious, many people have been saying this for years behind closed doors ,to scared to open up in public incase the PC brigade crucify them with the usuall (racist) jibe. I have always said what needs to be said ,and many times have been in trouble for it,my answer to it was so what ,i am only saying what millions are talking about but are to frightened to say, have a backbone and open your mouths. Boris talks about being proud to being british, its weird to hear many people calling themselfs pakistani, indian, romanian etc while being born hear before calling themselfs british, that i dont get ,is it what they are being taught in the youth clubs, home mosks i wonder ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,im of ,dogs just p***ed my floor 735062 As a Scotsman, are you pro-British or do you want Scotland independent from Britain? I'm half-Scottish. My Scottish grandfather, who was a sergeant-major in the Army in the 1950's and 1960's, hates the English (except his English family, of course!) but wants Scotland to remain in the UK. He doesn't want an independent Scotland. However, his brother, always votes SNP at elections and my granddad doesn't like him doing that. Tommy Posted July 17, 2005 #35 Share Posted July 17, 2005 I think this topic is fascinating, yet incredibly complex. For those who aren’t British I don’t think they appreciate how divided the UK still is in part. There seems to be increasingly less emphasis on individual national identity from a global perspective. I guess it begs the question can the Union work whereby ALL countries feel they are gaining something. Scotland has had it rough in the past, but does that mean that we can’t reform the system to learn from past mistakes. Over the past decade there have been some major constitutional reforms. Most significantly there has been devolution favouring subsidiarity, bringing power closer to the people it governs, which I don’t think many people will argue with; but I still think there is more to do to satisfy all countries of the Union. While I think that the general consensus among Scots is that they’ve been the unwilling partner in this Union in the past, (with good reason to feel that) does that mean that they’d not be willing to try and reform it to better suit them for years to come? We can’t change past events but we can shape our future. I think the reason this re-Britannification of Britain won’t work is because while we might respect the UK as a political entity, I think that the majority of people will pledge their allegiance to their individual country rather than to a ‘Union’ in most cases. After all what is Britishness? It’s a very tough question to answer. I agree with Boris that we should encourage certain ‘British’ values’, but how can we begin to identify such values when we are such a diverse entity? It will be no easy feat. I believe that cultural diversity is a must. To conform to any overly rigid ‘British standard’ would be to undermine our richly diverse society of which we should be proud of. Interesting article. wunarmdscissor Posted July 19, 2005 #41 Share Posted July 19, 2005 great post tommy. i actually cant decide what i want. i see the benefits of being british and im a proud proud briton , howeverim far more patriotic about my scottish and even irish roots. as tommy said i would rather pledge allegiance to my home nation , whith which i am culturally and racially linked to. i have much more in common with my fellow scots and irish , than the english , thats not to say i dont like the english far from it. i just beleive that our cultures are completley different, just look at the general election , scotland, ireland and wales are socialistic nations and the english vote with a more right wing leaning. and no i dont mean nazism or anything stupid like that. however i see nothing so far in the SNP or any other party especiallyt the SSP (whom i hate with every bone in my body, more than the tories) to suggest that scotland would bemefit much from independance. im a realistic person. like tommy i think whats the point, yes we suffered in the past , but the past is the past. why not work together , make britain even better than the relative utopia it is compared to other many many countries around the world. i think british values are evident to a certain degree , however i would argue that there are massive cultural differences between the home nations. i still dont know if that is a good thing or a bad thing with regards to the union. Tommy Posted July 23, 2005 #42 Share Posted July 23, 2005 Wun, thanks for your post. i think whats the point, yes we suffered in the past , but the past is the past. why not work together , make britain even better than the relative utopia it is compared to other many many countries around the world. I think the UK is such a unique place because of the inherent cultural diversity with our 4 countries bound together. Yes, we could all split up and become independent, but I’m not sure how this will help in any way, I just think it would be more detrimental than not. I’d like to think that independence would only happen as a last resort if nothing good can come of this Union. There would also be international factors to take into account if we were all to split up, like the ties to Commonwealth Countries who are proud to keep their relations with us. Countries within the Commonwealth Realm still recognize the Queen as their Head of State, I wonder if this would still be the case if there was no UK. however i see nothing so far in the SNP or any other party especiallyt the SSP (whom i hate with every bone in my body, more than the tories) to suggest that scotland would bemefit much from independance. As for Scotland, I honestly don’t know if it would ‘benefit’ from becoming independent. All we have really found out is that it probably is economically viable for Scotland to become independent should it feel the need to. If that were the case would she possibly seek to integrate further with Europe as they share a similar left wing ideology. (although I think Blair will be trying to change Europe’s left wing stance very soon) Would Scotland perhaps even join the Euro? It’s interesting to speculate about the possibilities, but I would personally like to see us stay as the United Kingdom. *ok who knows the words to 'Rule Britannia'?! My theory was that Scotland would join the EU, while England( or the rest of Britain for that matter) would lean more towards America.
Blackleaf Posted July 28, 2005 Author #46 Share Posted July 28, 2005 .... I don't understand. You say you hate being governed by other counties, yet in Britain the English govern Wales, Scotland and North Ireland. 735882 The English do NOT rule Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Those 3 (and also England) are ruled by the British parliament in Westminster, which is not the English parliament. If anyone's oppressed, it's England. England doesn't have a parliament, unlike Scotland. And even if it was the English parliament, then what the hell are Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish people doing in it? Get out! It's the ENGLISH Parliament! The English aren't allowed in the Scottish Parliament or the Welsh Assembly. Either you acknowledgethe fact that the English don't rule Scotland, and the fact that Scotland has its own parliament and England doesn't is unfair and undemocratic, or you believe that England rules Scotland, in which case you should try and persuade the government to kick out all the Scottish, Welsh and Irish MP's out of ENGLAND's Parliament. Or, maybe let English MP's sit in the Scottish Parliament.
Blackleaf Posted July 28, 2005 Author #47 Share Posted July 28, 2005 That annoys me when a Welshman or a Scotsman says that "England rules Scotland" whilst there are Scottish and Welsh MP's sitting in the BRITISH Parliament at Westminster interefering in English-only affairs that have nothing to do with Scotland and Wales, but English MP's aren't allowed to interfere in Scottish or Welsh politics that have nothing to do with England! Tony Blair is Scottish, for God's sake. When John Reid was Britain's Health Secretary, the English were in the unfair position of a SCOTSMAN being ENGLAND's Health Secretary (and who was also the Health Secretary of the rest of the UK) whilst Scotland, because it has its own parliament, has ANOTHER Health Secretary, only for Scotland, and who must be Scottish and not English or Welsh! But because England doesn't have a Parliament, we don't have a Health Minister for England.

What's wrong with dumping British nuclear waste in Scotland? It has to be dumped SOMEWHERE in the UK. Or would you be happy if it was just all dumped in England? The Scots seem to forget that Scotland takes more money out of the UK (and 92% of the UK's wealth belongs to England) than it puts in.
