yes there was a girl named emily rose. she was from henderson, minnesota. it's not the girl annaliese that a lot of people are confusing her with. she's not from germany as so many have said. if you go to the sony website and look the movie up you are able to read the newspaper clippings and the police report.

OK, there was a girl named Emily Rose. Fine. But what I'm saying and what we're all talking about (what this is based on) are the tapes regarding the exorcism of Emily Rose (the movie title) - the REAL person named Emily Rose. The movie is based on a girl named ANNELIESE MICHEL. The title of the movie has nothing AT ALL to do with a real person. The name was changed (to Emily Rose from Anneliese Michel) right before filming started because of legal issues.

As for a real person who is named Emily Rose - that is NOT who the movie is based on. That's my point yes.gif .

What I read was that this is based on a girl in Germany.

833642

although the story in germany is fascinating and tragic all at once, this particular movie is based on a girl from the usa. i think a few people are getting confused with the two different stories.

the movie is not based on annalise, it's based on a girl named emily rose from henderson, minnesota - small town outside of st. paul.

looks like a great film "1 to watch" feel sorry for the girl though "annalise".

found out some more information about the girl.

It all began about 1968, when Anneliese (a very religious nurtured girl, who was born on the 21st of September 1952) has an insult. Paralysed and shaking she can’t call her 3 sisters, or her parents (Josef and Anna) for help. A Neurologist at the Psychiatric Clinic Würzburg diagnosed Epilepsy Type "Grand Mal". Depressions, often occurring after those Epilepsy Attacks, have not been recognized.

After a long stay at the Hospital, she begins to see devilish grimaces during her daily praying. In the fall of 1970 Anneliese returned to school, and while other girls live the freedom of the 70s, she starts believing to be possessed. She can’t find another reason for the grimaces. Now also voices are following her, saying that Anneliese will "stew in hell". The Depressions get stronger and stronger and Anneliese doesn’t see any reason for the meetings at the Doctors, because they don’t bring a relief. Just once, does she tell a Doctor about the "Demons", which even give orders to her now. But the gap between known Medicine and Catholic Ideology is too big, to get her problems considered.

In the summer of 1973 her parents ask different Pastors for an Exorcism. The Catholic Chaplains reject and recommend, to continue the medication on the now 20 year old Anneliese. The proof for a possession (Infestatio) is strictly structured, and before not all criterions are fulfilled, the Bishop can’t approve an Exorcism. Aversions against religious objects, speaking in languages the person never learned and supernatural powers, are just some of them.

Pastor Ernst Alt, supervising Anneliese at that time, asked the Bishop of Würzburg for the Permit to perform an Exorcism on Anneliese Michel in 1974. His request was also rejected, so he recommends Anneliese an even more religious Lifestyle. But the attacks don’t disappear. At her parents house in Klingenberg, she insults, beats, bites the family members. She doesn’t eat, because the demons don’t allow her to. Anneliese sleeps at the stone floor, eats Spiders, Flies and Coal. She even drinks her own Urine. For hours, she yells thru the house. Anneliese breaks Crucifixes, destroys paintings of Jesus and demolishes Rosaries. Running thru the house, tearing the clothes from her body and urinating on the floor is nothing unusual anymore. She even commits self-mutilation.

In September 1975, after an exact Verification, the Bishop of Würzburg, Josef Stangl, assigns Father Arnold Renz and Pastor Ernst Alt with the order, to perform "The Great Exorcism" on Anneliese Michel. The basis for this ritual is the "Rituale Romanum", a still valid Canon Law from the 17th century. Pastor Alt and Father Renz try to save Anneliese from, in the meantime over 6 individuals (Lucifer, Judas Iscariot, Nero, Cain, Hitler and Fleischmann, a disgraced Frankish Priest from the 16th century, and some other "Damned"), which manifested thru her. From September ’75 till July ’76, 1 to 2 sessions a week were held. Sometimes her attacks were so strong, that she had to be hold down by 3 men, or they had to chain her up. Between those sessions in her parent’s house, Anneliese has some time without any attacks, in which she goes to school, makes her final examinations at the Pedagogic Academy in Würzburg and goes to church. Just like she used to live before.

But the attacks didn’t stop. The young woman gets unconscious and paralyzed  more often. The Exorcism continues over weeks and months. Always praying the same specified prayers and incantations, over and over again. Sometimes the parents are present, or her sisters. Even a married couple, that claims of having "discovered" Anneliese. Over several weeks, she denies every food. Her knees are burst, because of the 600 Genuflections she does obsessive during the Exorcisms. During the Exorcism there were over 40 audio tapes recorded, to log the possession.

The last day of the Exorcism Rite is the 30th of June 1976. Anneliese is now also suffering from a Pneumonia, totally emaciated and having high temperature. But she can’t waive doing the Genuflections. Her parents even help her doing them. "Beg for Absolution.", is the last sentence Anneliese says to the Exorcists. To her mother she says: "Mother, I’m afraid.". Anna Michel recorded the death of her daughter on the next day, the 1st of July 1976. At Noon, Pastor Ernst Alt informs the prosecuting authorities in Aschaffenburg. The Senior Prosecutor began investigating.

Short time before these events, William Friedkin’s "The Exorcist" came to the cinemas in Germany (1974), and started a paranormal Hysteria all over the land. Psychiatrist all over Europe, reported of an increase of obsessive ideas at their patients.  For the Prosecutors, the factual situation is more than bizarre. And it took almost 2 years, until the "Klingenberg Case" was brought to court. Anneliese’s parents and the 2 Exorcists were accused of negligent homicide. There were only 2 questions to answer. What caused the death of Anneliese Michel, and who was responsible ?

The cause of death, as diagnosed by the Forensics: "Anneliese starved to death" ! If the Accused would have begun with forced feed, one  week before her dead, Anneliese’s live could have been saved. Her sister told in front of the court, that Anneliese didn’t want to go to a Mental House, sedated and forced to eat.  The Exorcists tried to prove the presence of the demons, by playing the tapes they recorded. There were such strange dialogues, like 2 of the demons arguing , who of them has to leave Anneliese’s body first. The demon, that called himself Hitler, talked with Frankish Accent (Hitler was born Austrian). None of those present during the Exorcisms, never had a doubt, that this weren’t demons.

The Psychiatrists, which have been ordered by the court, talked about "Doctrinaire Induction". Saying, that the Priests have offered Anneliese the contents of her psychotic behaviour. Consequentially she later accepted the behaviour of a, from a demon possessed person. Also an unsettled sexual development, along with the diagnosed Temporal Lobe Epilepsy influenced Anneliese’s Psychosis.

The judgement was, although the parents and the chaplains were adjudged guilty, not as hard as expected. All of the accused were sentenced to 6 months jail on probation, because of manslaughter resulting from negligence and omitted First Aid. The accused should have helped by taking care of the medical treatment the girl needed. But instead of doing so they aggravated the bad constitution, by using naïve Practices.

A Commission of the German Bishop-Conference later declared, that Anneliese Michel was not possessed. Anneliese’s body didn’t even find peace after the girl’s death. Because of some believe in miracles, it was said that her body doesn’t decay, her corpse gets exhumed 11/2 year after the burial. With the final result, that the body decays, as every other dead body. Till now her grave is a place of pilgrimage, for Rosary-praying pilgrims, who still think, that Anneliese Michel has defeated the Devil.

In 1999 Cardinal Medina Estévez presented Journalists, in Vatican-City, the new Version of the "Rituale Romanum" that was used by the Catholic Church since 1614. He presented them "De exorcismis et supplicationibus quibusdam" better know as "The Exorcism for the upcoming Millennium". After more then 10 years of editing, the Pope approbated the new Exorcism Rite, which is now allowed for worldwide usage. The change was initiated by the death of Anneliese Michel. The German Bishop-Conference demanded to ultimately abolish the "Rituale Romanum". The Vatican answered in his own way, with a new form of Exorcism. More then 20 years after Anneliese Michel died.

NO Ronnie, it isn't based on a girl named Emily Rose from Minnesota. What part of this don't you understand???! no.gif Read about "Emily" (Anneliese) on the webpage

http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/theexorcismofemilyrose/

and enter the site. It explains all about Anneliese Michel.

The movie was also filmed at my house (the big green house in the beginning of the preview) so I know all about who it was based on and when the names changed and why. Even if it wasn't filmed at my house, it's all said in the link above.

833687

you don't have to be rude, i just got confused with all the information on a bunch of sites and all the chat here. if you can't be decent because someone made a mistake then keep your thoughts to yourself. it's not as if you have never made a mistake in your life.

833707

Wow, look at us go. Sorry Ronnie, didn't mean to come across as being rude. I'm sorry if I did offend you, it was not my intention here at all. And yes, I've been wrong before yes.gif .

Anyhow, I can understand how you'd get confused. I wonder if the "real" Emily Rose will have something to say about this movie? laugh.gif

So, again, sorry, I really honestly didn't mean to come across as rude, just trying to get my point across. Hope you can forgive me innocent.gif

no problem. i can take the hit for it as well, it's quite easy to misinterpret what a message is saying when you don't know ther person. and perhaps i shouldn't be so harsh either.

anyway, thank you for clearing everything about the story, after researching it this morning i was getting confused with the lack of information now that sony is in full preview mode. it's difficult finding any 'real' information about the story with all the reviews and the media frenzy to make it the best thing that has come out this year.

I found a link about the real girl but now I can't seem to find it and of course, I never bookmarked it. There is also a book out, maybe if you search you could find it, oh, then again, I think it's written in German disgust.gif .

I think if you do search you might find some stuff. But, like you say, now that the review is out you don't know what's real and what's not. I know when we were first approached last year in October regarding the filming (for our property) I was up at the computer right away searching for info on Anneliese, I HAD to know the story. It was then, before ALL the reviews and previews and stuff like this were out, so it was easy then to find info on her and her story. But now, who knows if what you read is current and true?

I'm going to see the movie this Saturday, can't wait!! I know from what I saw being filmed it's going to be pretty freaky! unsure.gif

The news clippings are not real. The story is based on Anneliesse Michels--and was to be titled as such. Just changed names and dates for legal reasons.

From scifi wire ...

11/05/04

Star Laura Linney spoke with SciFi Wire about the film, saying: "The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel is based on a trial that happened in Bavaria in the late '70s. It will not take place in Bavaria, nor will it take place in the late '70s, but it's about a woman who went through a series of exorcisms and then died a young girl of 22."

She continued... "The priest [who led the exorcism] was arrested and put on trial for negligent homicide. Tom Wilkinson [Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind] is playing the priest. Campbell Scott [Dead Again] is the prosecuting attorney, and I'm the defense attorney. So it deals with all of that stuff."

When asked if the film would have dramatic or supernatural elements, her reply was: "I think there probably will be flashbacks to the exorcism and what happened there, because it's a court case, and you're dealing with different viewpoints of the event. And that's basically one of the things that will happen: ... You will take a look at an exorcism and how different people interpret what they're seeing."

10/01/04

I've added to the cast. Shooting for the film begins in November in Vancouver. There's not much background on the film yet to actually classify it as horror, but I'm keeping it up for now.

DETAILS

- Originally titled The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel.

- Based on a real court trial in the late 1970's in Bavaria. Read more about it here.

- The film will have different points of views recounting the events.

- Written by Scott Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman (Urban Legends: Final Cut).

"... A Commission of the German Bishop-Conference later declared, that Anneliese Michel was not possessed..."

Ya, that sucks, lol, I'd abandon the party JUST to see the movie tongue.gif .

I remember the book cover being red and black with a picture of her on it... or there was just a picture of her somewhere that I saw last year. oo I can't remember. Having German family helped us when I found things about her that I couldn't read, I just sent the links to my husbands family in Germany so they could read it for us.

I sooooooooo hope this is a good movie, I'm so sick of stupid scary movies no.gif . Of course, I also can't wait too see all the shots of my house because it was changed SO much inside just for the film, the outside was changed, too, and gave it such a creepy, haunted look so it's really not like looking at my house afterall. (It's actually yellow, not green and old looking normally haha).

CAN'T WAIT! tongue.gif

Hmm I was just wondering, I have never heard of a male or a boy being possed by some demon. Is there some particulare choice for demons, preffering female over male?

Actually the movie "The Exorcist" was based on a story about a boy. They changed it to a girl for the movie.

The previous poster meant (I think) the film "The Exorcist". This was based loosely upon events that happend to a boy who lived in Maryland. There is a film out called "Possessed" (I have it on DVD) and chronicles in a movie for TV way what occurred to him. It stars Timothy Dalton, Christopher Plummer and Piper Laurie, and was directed by Steven De Souza. It's okay, but not as dramatic or as chilling as the Exorcist..

834087

Yup, just some of the movie, though. They used out dining room and made it into a 70's-style kitchen, pretty tacky really. There was a pantry (that is our TV room) off of the "kitchen" that they made, too. They used our living room and had it as such but changed the decor, carpet, put up old wallpaper and closed our pocket doors to make a wall between the "kitchen" and the living room. They put a huge piano infront of the doors. They used one set of (indoor) stairs with the wooden railing. They used one room upstairs and made a set for the other one. They used one of our barns and then made a set, also, for that, too. Outside they used a lot of area, torn down my horse paddocks and used that area for the rainy, muddy scenes... I got new turf and fences after that! grin2.gif Ummm, they used the East porch and one of the driveways (we have 2).

Unfortunately, when they were done, my husband didn't want to hire a painter to paint back to the original, so we had to do it all by ourselves and took the money instead, we're JUST finishing painting now hmm.gif . See, my house was pretty, very historical. When they painted it for filming, they painted it so it looked old and abandoned, very unkept, I was SO embarrassed because it looked AWFUL!! It had to stay that way until spring when we could start painting. Hey, maybe I can attach a picture.... I'll see. I think I did it. That's our house BEFORE painting and AFTER filming.

Cool, hu? I have yet to see the movie before I know what all was used, can't wait!

835096

We were allowed if we chose to, but because it was being filmed in November it was really cold and for the most part, raining (it's always raining here sad.gif ). It was also very crowded in the house, so to see what was being filmed inside was really hard, what we did tho at times was watch it on the TV monitor from upstairs where they were editing as they were going, that was easier than being right on the set. It took 3 weeks total from set up to the end of filming and we were set up in a hotel not far, but to be here when they were filming was kind of a pain in the a** because there were road blocks and trailers and trailers and more trailers, it wasn't MY home for 3 weeks! It was a movie set tongue.gif .

It's easier to watch B movies and commercials while they're filmed here. The last one was a Verizon Wireless commercial but it wasn't aired in Canada so I never got to see it sad.gif but did watch it being made. Some guys were washing a blue car in my front yard and some other guy "flew" in and thew some packages at them... hmm.gif , that's what I saw. They also filmed out in our field but didn't watch that part. Any Americans see that commercial??? I wish I got to see it.
