Blackleaf Posted August 22, 2005 #1 Share Posted August 22, 2005 (edited) http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2005/ARWU2005_Top100.htm Eight of the Top 10 universities in the world are American, and two are British. Cambridge University is ranked 2 in the world and Oxford University is ranked 10th. There's a UK university at number 23 and another at number 26. The highest-ranked European university that isn't British is a university in Zurich, Switzerland. The next European university below that is Utrecht - ranked 41st. France only has 4 universities in the Top 100, Germany has only 5, but Britain has 11. In fact, only the US has more universities than Britain in the top 100 - it has 55 of them, more than half of the whole 100. Notice the highest ranked schools are private.
Blackleaf Posted August 26, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted August 26, 2005 (edited) British students always come 4th or 5th in the world for subjects such as mathematics and science. The US usually comes about 28th. Usually, only the Scandinavian countries such as Finland, Sweden and Denmark are the ones whose students get better grades than the British. Of Europe's top 5 universities, 4 are British and one is Swiss. Edited August 26, 2005 by Blackleaf

I am me Posted August 26, 2005 #6 Share Posted August 26, 2005 greeks in general are far better in maths than us here in the UK. i was always in the highest groups for maths at school and got a B for my GCSE's all those years ago , but when i got to uni and we started doing maths again, the greeks in my year had learnt far more in general than the brits, and they were learning it from a younger age. 810910[/snapback] you mean geeks, not greeks right? haha
Guest Lottie Posted August 27, 2005 #7 Share Posted August 27, 2005 (edited) Eight of the Top 10 universities in the world are American, and two are British Considering you can fit the whole of the UK into the Florida state and then a little bit more, it not suprising the US came out top with Universities. So in that regard the US/ UK thing is pretty unbalanced. The UK Universtity system has always been highly sought after if you can get into red bricks such as Oxford, Cambridge or Durham for examples. Diminisch Posted August 27, 2005 #8 Share Posted August 27, 2005 There was a group of students from Russia, Ukraine and Kazakstan(dont know if i spelled that right) who went to England, USA, Canada, France, and Germany and tested out the Universities. They said that Englands Uni's were much better than any other ones theyve been to. Russian students comming to visist us here have 2 educations by the time they are 21. I was in Russia just 2 months ago and the education there is intense, far harder than in Canada, can't speak for the States though i havent been there. baastetnoir Posted August 27, 2005 #9 Share Posted August 27, 2005 I doubt the veracity of that Poll, once I know for a fact The Medical University of Coimbra (Portugal) is amongst one of the best in the World, and there are many many doctors specially Plastic and Cardiac curgeons who go there for "updates". But Portugal for some reason has never been to popular, so it never shows up in Polls...unless its a Poll about florest fire...

StalingradK Posted August 27, 2005 #11 Share Posted August 27, 2005 Of course the USA's Uni's are going to be the Top, I mean, They were like the best of the best ever, so people came from different countries to go to them, and with more attention they will get better funds and what not, and there fore stay and or become better.
