U.S. dismisses call for Chavez's killing

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Bush administration officials Tuesday dismissed Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson's call for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez as the remarks of a private citizen, but Venezuela accused Robertson of promoting terrorism.

Venezuela's Vice President Vicente Rangel accused Robertson of inciting violence and challenged the White House to take action against Robertson.

"What is the U.S. government going to do about this criminal statement made by one of its citizens?" he asked.

Robertson told viewers of his longtime show, "The 700 Club," on Monday that Chavez was turning his oil-rich South American country into "a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism all over the continent."

"If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think we really ought to go ahead and do it," said Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition.

In Havana, where he had met with Cuban President Fidel Castro to discuss relations between the two countries, Chavez told reporters he had never heard of Robertson.

Asked about the broadcaster's call for his assassination, Chavez said, "It doesn't matter to me."

"I don't know who that person is," he said. "As far as his opinion of me goes, I couldn't care less."

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Tuesday that Robertson has the right of any private citizen to say whatever he wants, but added that the broadcaster's remarks "do not represent the views of the United States."

"His comments are inappropriate," he said. "Allegations that we are planning to take hostile action against the Venezuelan government are completely baseless and without fact."

But Venezuela's ambassador to the United States, Bernardo Alvarez, said Robertson was "no ordinary private citizen" and demanded the White House strongly condemn the remarks.

Alvarez said the Christian Coalition, which Robertson no longer leads, claims some 2 million members and helped jump-start President Bush's 2000 presidential campaign after his New Hampshire primary loss.

"Robertson has been one of this president's staunchest allies," he said.

"The United States might not permit its citizens to use its territory and airwaves to incite terrorists abroad and the murder of a democratically elected president," Alvarez said. "Venezuela demands that the U.S. abide by international and domestic law and respect its country and our president."

Venezuela's vice president said the U.S. response "challenges the antiterrorist ideology of the American government."

"What are the American authorities going to do? The ball is in their court," Rangel said.

Neither Bush nor any White House spokesperson commented on the matter Tuesday.

Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, who ran against Robertson for the GOP presidential nomination in 1988, called the comments "stupid" and "ludicrous" and suggested Robertson apologize "very quickly."

Having done business with Venezuela, knowing the contempt they hold for the

U.S., and how they exploit that- excessive surprise taxes on foreign investment,

withholding information, and worse... I have my own opinions. Until you have been down that road, and actually gotten to know mainstream Venezuelans, you don't understand.

i dont see much difference here to how iran incited the death of salmon rushdie, but because its a US citizen saying it, it makes it ok? wrong, freedom of speech is good until you start abusing it and inciting the murder of anyone. here in the UK we are deporting people to countries where they will be tortured for doing the very same thing. i dont see how this robertson can call himself a christian or a follower of christ, did jesus ever incite the killings of the romans who he knew were going to murder him, no. robertson is a disgrace to the christian faith.

But the British did let people in that called for the death of the U.S.. It is now only after your terror attacks that the British has changed their policy.

American media are trying to make Venezuela look like fools that should be extinct.

They do that by citing Chavez' phrases like "What is the U.S. government going to do about this criminal statement made by one of its citizens?", and make it look like something "typically anti-freedom of speech, typically communistic". bull****.

Only because Chavez refuses to let American oil conglomerates into his country so that they can rob it just like they do with the rest of the third world.

Therefore Venezuela is, according to Americans, basically a rathole housing communists (and now terrorists, of all. Hilarious.)

It's called opinionmaking. People lash out at the "communist" scum, the American government comes up with an excuse to raid the country, overthrows the Venezuelan government, and voila - the oil is in their hands.

That's how it works.

Very true...it has nothing to do with communism. If Americans would read more instead of listening to propaganda outlets then they could actually help third world nations better. Armed with the truth we can do much in attacking the problem. And the problem is not Chavez...the problem is the Oil outfits and greed. Why must America send good world leaders to an early grave over greed? Is that the way of God? Or spirituality? Or a law abiding citizen?

there is a big difference between Roberts a private citizen saying something like that, and perhaps a government official saying something like that, hell even a radical cleric is different in that they are inciting violence within the followers, Roberts was discussing what he believed should be US foreign policy, something he has absolutely no control over

Geez Bathory I cant believe you are being an apologist for this Pat Robertson fellow. It makes me sick how you twist this to fit your convenient little rebuttle. If you asked most people who Pat Robertson is they would NOT say "...Oh yeah Pat...hes that private citizen guy...", no, they would tell you hes a TV evangelist who "heals" people on TV.

Its so misleading to call him a private citizen when his image as some kind of religious leader outshines that statement. And as such, a religious leader with a following as large as the 700 club has...should not be promoting assassinations using christianity as a hook.

At this point, Pat is no different than those that you call "crazy Imams" bathory.

no, a fundy islam calls fellow muslims to kill any non-muslim

pat robertson (as bad as he is, don't think i love this guy), made a statement in regards to his opinion on government foreign policy. Is he an influential person? sure, but i didn't see him telling his followers to go do anything.

Stop making it into something it isn't

stop the spin, it's not about free speech and you know it.

he's a religious leader in the u.s.

first, as a religious leader, if he truly is a christian, and believed what he preached, he would not go on about killing another person, not what christians are suppoded to believe.

secondly, if a iman in a middle east country called for the assassination of your president, you'd be livid and no doubt invade the country, just for the sport.

robertson's a freak, and the fact that the whitehouse considers him an ally, is always scary, once americans truly sperate state and religion, then you can call robertoson a private citizen, and hide behind the free speeech spin.

How is it possible to laud the freedom of speech and claim that it was exercized by Robertson and then to deny it to Chavez when he states his response?

First of all, I am mad that he would say that, just because he is a spokesman for Christians, and this gives Christians a bad rep, or at least more of a bad rep.

This isn't so outrageous though. This type of thing (assasination) is discussed all the time behind closed doors within the government. United States didn't become the worlds super power by being the nice guy. The average person can't comprehend how the world works, so we give that responsibility to our politicians, and government.

"The CIA is not now nor has it ever been a central intelligence agency. It is the covert action arm of the President's foreign policy advisers. In that capacity it overthrows or supports foreign governments while reporting "intelligence" justifying those activities. It shapes its intelligence, even in such critical areas as Soviet nuclear weapons capability, to support presidential policy. Disinformation is a large part of its covert action responsibility, and the American people are the primary target of its lies."

An Introduction Programming Manual: Operations Research Technical Manual TW-SW7905.1

The Political Structure of a Nation - Dependency

The primary reason why the individual citizens of a country create a political structure is a subconscious wish or desire to perpetuate their own dependency relationship of childhood. Simply put, they want a human god to eliminate all risk from their life, pat them on the head, kiss their bruises, put a chicken on every dinner table, clothe their bodies, tuck them into bed at night, and tell them that everything will be alright when they wake up in the morning.

This public demand is incredible, so the human god, the politician, meets incredibility with incredibility by promising the world and delivering nothing. So who is the bigger liar? the public? or the "godfather"?

This public behavior is surrender born of fear, laziness, and expediency. It is the basis of the welfare state as a strategic weapon, useful against a disgusting public.

Action/Offense

Most people want to be able to subdue and/or kill other human beings which disturb their daily lives, but they do not want to have to cope with the moral and religious issues which such an overt act on their part might raise.

Therefore, they assign the dirty work to others (including their own children) so as to keep the blood off their hands.

They rave about the humane treatment of animals and then sit down to a delicious hamburger from a  whitewashed slaughterhouse down the street and out of sight. But even more hypocritical, they pay taxes to finance a professional association of hit men collectively called politicians, and then complain about corruption in government.

Responsibility

Again, most people want to be free to do the things (to explore, etc.) but they are afraid to fail.

The fear of failure is manifested in irresponsibility, and especially in delegating those personal responsibilities to others where success is uncertain or carries possible or created liabilities (law) which the person is not prepared to accept.

They want authority (root word - "author"), but they will not accept responsibility or liability. So they hire politicians  to face reality for them.

Summary:

The people hire the politicians so that the people can:

-obtain security without managing it.

-obtain action without thinking about it.

-inflict theft, injury, and death upon others without having to contemplate either life or death.

-avoid responsibility for their own intentions.

-obtain the benefits of reality and science without exerting themselves in the discipline of facing or learning either of these things.

They give the politicians the power to create and manage a war machine to:

-provide for the survival of the nation/womb.

-prevent encroachment of anything upon the nation/womb.

-destroy the enemy who threatens the nation/womb.

-destroy those citizens of their own country who do not conform for the sake of -stability of the nation/womb.

Politicians hold many quasi-military jobs, the lowest being the police which are soldiers, the attorneys and C.P.A.s next who are spies and saboteurs (licensed), and the judges who shout orders and run the closed union military shop for whatever the market will bear. The generals are industrialists.

The "presidential" level of commander-in-chief is shared by the international bankers. The people know that they have created this farce and financed it

with their own taxes (consent), but they would rather knuckle under than be the hypocrite.

Thus, a nation becomes divided into two very distinct parts, a docile sub-nation [great silent majority] and a political sub-nation. The political sub-nation remains attached to the docile sub-nation, tolerates it, and leaches its substance until it grows strong enough to detach itself and then devour its parent.
