Chavez offers cheap gas to poor in U.S

HAVANA, Cuba (Reuters) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, popular with the poor at home, offered on Tuesday to help needy Americans with cheap supplies of gasoline.

"We want to sell gasoline and heating fuel directly to poor communities in the United States," the populist leader told reporters at the end of a visit to Communist-run Cuba.

Chavez did not say how Venezuela would go about providing gasoline to poor communities. Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA owns Citgo, which has 14,000 gas stations in the United States.

The offer may sound attractive to Americans feeling pinched by soaring prices at the pump but not to the U.S. government, which sees Chavez as a left-wing troublemaker in Latin America.

Gasoline is cheaper than mineral water in oil-producing Venezuela, where consumers can fill their tanks for less than $2. Average gas prices have risen to $2.61 a gallon in the United States, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Chavez said Venezuela could supply gasoline to Americans at half the price they now pay if intermediaries who "speculated ... and exploited consumers" were cut out.

Venezuela supplies Cuba with generously financed oil and plans to help Caribbean nations foot their oil bills.

Chavez, in Cuba to attend the graduation of Cuban-trained doctors from 28 countries, was seen off at the airport by Cuban President Fidel Castro. Washington has accused the two leaders of being a destabilizing influence in South America.

Chavez and Castro offered to give poor Americans free health care and train doctors free of charge.

No wonder the U.S wants this guy dead. How dare he offer us cheaper gas and oil for the poor. The nerve of some people. w00t.gif

Why doesn't he supply fuel to us Brits, there seems to be so much moaning by Americans about souring oil prices they seem to forget we pay the equivalent of over $6 a gallon, I'll kill to pay $2.61 that's probably about 40p a litre!

I hear you Barman when I heard you guys pay over $6.00 a for a gallon i said WTF. i wouldnt even drive if it cost that much here. Gas would be more expensive then a car payment.

Its good to see that at least some countries leaders actually care for their citzens. So many countries only cater to the needs of the rich while totally ignoring the poor.

Chavez is doing soemthing every world leader should do...and the US says he's a threat?.... now I really wonder what the agenda of the Bush administration is.... because it certainly isn't about making the world a better place.... I wonder if George Bush's pockets are deep enough to throw all that dirty oil money into them....

Thinking obviously isn't this guys strong suit. Free my rear end. We going to issue "poor" cards for the "poor" to carry to prove they're "poor" enough to get this special gas for their cars?

Oboyoboy... I can feel the STRATEGY behind this...

He's going to start winning the approval of americans while making them doubt their leaders... by giving candies to the poor majority, the ones the government thought they could leave as is without any fear of repercussion.

I says, Hugo just grabbed their nuts.

that's rich, considering the IQ of your president.

He obviously is smart enough to be the leader of the free world.

Of the free world Huh. Since when was the U.S. the only free country in the world... He's the prez of America and thats it.

He's smarter than his opponent John Kerry, and probably has a higher IQ than most on these boards.

Who said America was the only free country in the world? Who? Where?

The US Education system is an embarassment, thanks to liberals.

The only ones this guy will "convince" are the ones that perpetuate class warfare (leftists/socialists), the uneducated (products and constituents of the left), and the ignorant (willfully so, like the ones that think Bush "outed" Plame against all evidence to the contrary).

And why does the lefts misguided hatred of Bush seep into this topic anyway? What in the world does Bush's speeches have to do with this idiotic idea of Chavez? How can anyone possibly think that Anything is Free?

i merely highlighted some of bushes speeches to illustrate to you that thinking is evidently not one of bushes, are the speeches ive highlighted evidence that bush thought before he uttered those ridiculous comments?

I'm relating his ability to think, to his ability to be able to give the "American Poor" "Cheap Gas", and provide "Free Health Care" and "Free Medica Training".

You said it yourself:

beats me, it seems if you live in the real world, you quickly realise nothing is free,

Has nothing at all with your hatred of Bush (and his ?speech problems now?)that seems to seep into everything lately.

The US Education system is an embarassment, thanks to liberals.

yes its all the liberals faults that bush cant even string a sentence together blink.gif

What does Bush's unique organic natural speech manerisms have to do with anything? Yes, In another topic someday, sure I'll talk about what the left's done to create the problems in the education system.

why does your hatred for the liberals seep into the argument?  wink2.gif

Hmmm, free healthcare? A "Right" to cheap gas? Some of the ideas of Castro and Chavez? Because of the underlying principals in the topic?

Celumnaz just doesnt get it...he is another example of a hateful American who divides himself against others for no other reason than to be spiteful.

Example of the hate inherant in the system. Notice how many people like that have been coming out of the woodwork since right-wingism has been taking root since 9-11.

These people would cherish another civil war for no other reason than to take thier hatred out on some innocent person.

Whats your motto Cel' " Stars and BArs" ? That war is over...there is no need to be hateful anymore.

Educations problems are caused for alot of reasons and your answer is typical of a right -wing slant. If people like you were still in power then schools would still be segregated.

Also...it does not surprise me that Kennedy was killed in Texas.

The fact is that he is NOT the leader of the free world. He is not even accepted by most of the free world. . . .whatever the term "free world" means. But to the advanced, intelligent world, he remains the most dangerous, pompous and ignorant leader in the world. He exercises his middle-finger foreign policy and has driven his own nation into the worst international debt level in its history.

I have seen pubs in London that have George Bush's photo on the dart boards. I have heard people in Spain offer sympathies that Americans have to live under the leadership of this personality that is held in international ridicule. The media in almost all of Europe depicts him as the buffoon he really is. The leader of the free world? Yes, it has always been the President of the United States but that has gone by the wayside now thanks to the lasting damage he has done to the American economy and international reputation.

I just started my economics class a few days ago, and we learned the golden rule of economics - The is no such thing as a free lunch. This guy is just using those ideas to get people behind him. He must have something planned.

It was corporate fascists like the oil community and long time oil affiliates in CIA and military who helped steal the election with computerised voting hardware...hacked by the DIEBOLD corp for Bush.

Evil times. These people really are the worlds greatest terrorists. And they sit there in the White House and the underground VP complex(hitler bunker) and conspire dirty tricks on the rest of the world. Every damn one of these criminals served Nixon in an official capacity and we know what Nixon was up to so why are these criminals back? They are part of that fascist Military Industrial Complex network.

We have been had from within and most people say its just left/right politics...sad.

Just look at their records.

Oh no...riotboy...another body snatcher from Texas. What did you do with the real Americans body riotboy?

Chavez is still a voice in OPEC and OPEC is quietly punishing both the British and Americans for their involvement in Iraq. They do not state in the newsmedia of their various countries that they are. They are just doing it. If their economic system was not based on the dollar. Say the Euro, all OPEC would have to do is cut the price and flood the market. The United State's debt based economy would drop out like an old abandon cesspool in the yard. But OPEC lives on the dollar. So they are going to keep the price up and hold back on the amount sent. All I can say about Robertson's statement is " Lets get them more ticked off so they jack us some more" IDIOT! blink.gif

Bush protesters are always met with the claim, "He won the election, didn't he?" We, of course, assume that they are talking about the last election. We also hear that Bush is supported by the majority and while that is a frightening thought, we will accept it as a truth and an example of how a real democracy works.

Chavez has won two elections by a vast majority. Before anyone throws the claim of crooked Latin American elections forward, let us not forget that while Jimmy Carter was in Mexico to insure that the election was honest (and it was honest because the ruling party of 70 years was ousted), George and Jeb were ripping off the American electoral system. (Calling it a system is a compliment.)

The point is that if you support the idea of a democracy, then you must respect it in any nation where it exists. Pat Robertson is and always has been a fanatic idiot and it's sad to see those who join his ranks by agreeing with him.

Bush already was responsible for being behind the first Coup detat attempt against Chavez and it didnt work out because the people of Venezuela got Chavez out of jail and made him President again. Those two crooked generals who jailed Chavez ran to America.

Why do we tolerate Bush and freinds acting like this in the world? The CIA has been behind many Latin American coups where they were acting on a corporations behalf and installed a brutal dictator in charge after killing off the good guy who was democratic.

America is not a democracy and we dont support good rulers in the world. Our government is run like this to keep power in the hands of extremely wealthy few and to keep power out of the hands of we the people.

i hope that one day this countrys people will wake up to what has been going on and see it for what it is and do something about it. Unfettered capitalism puts government in the hands of private enterprise.

As soon as you say something about Bush, everyone assumes you are being a partisan and quickly dismiss points as partisan rhetoric...can Americans no longer weigh the gravity of a crime objectively?

What has happened to our news in this country is a horrible thing. No where is there any moderation..

When our military operates in this fashion...killing another foreign leader elected democraticly...what happens to them? Nothing. All they have to do is tell us the leader supported terrorism...what did you think was going to happen in this country where the worlds richest people get together with the worlds most powerful military and scheme. This is the face of the American century. How can you not call this fascism by definition?

How can so many people be fooled by this newest fear campaign and these divisive talk show hosts? Telling you that democrats and liberals are helping the terrorists.

This President is just a reflection of old colonialist power and is a danger to world peace and unity.

If you support Bush in what he is doing then you might as well support a bank robber or a murderer. This is the President who mocked a death row inmate from Texas on national t.v after said inmate had converted to christianity. I want to see a working man or woman who is in touch with all people a President. I want to see some unity in the world and our country instead of division. I want to see the Pentagon Black Budget dissappeAR. What sheep we all are for letting it go this far and not being more active. We are now the worlds laughing stock because of this "Bush".

I guess some people just arent happy unless the world is in chaos and fear prevails...We are right back in the same position we were in when Nixon was in office. Depression , war, fear, CIA doing domestic OPS against political adversaries, erosion of rights, more deregulation of companies, racism on rise oil hikes.

When these people tell you there should be less government what they are telling you is "more deregulation and less oversight for companies" but " more government spying and intrusiveness on its citizens".

Yup, and when you give stuff to the poor, doesn't that make them not poor? Nothing in the world is free.
