On this day in history:

The Imperial Japanese Navy made its attack on Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii, was aimed at the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy and its defending Army Air Corps and Marine air forces. The attack damaged or destroyed twelve U.S. warships and 188 aircraft, and killed 2,403 American servicemen and 68 civilians. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto planned the raid as the start of the Pacific Campaign of World War II, and it was commanded by Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, who lost 64 servicemen. However, the Pacific Fleet's three aircraft carriers were not in port and so were undamaged, as were oil tank farms and machine shops. Using these resources the United States was able to rebound within six months to a year. The U.S. public saw "Pearl Harbor" as a treacherous act and rallied strongly against the Japanese Empire, resulting in its later defeat. This attack has been called the Bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Pearl Harbor but, most commonly, the Attack on Pearl Harbor or simply Pearl Harbor.

Elvis Was Really Blonde

Elvis' hair wasn't naturally black. In fact it was a sandy blonde. He dyed it black in his teens as a tribute to his hero, Roy Orbison.

The first shot of World War II in Europe was fired from the German battleship Schleswig Holstein which was on an official visit to Poland and berthed in Danzig harbour. At 4.30 am on September 1, 1939, the ship moved slowly down the Port Canal and took up position opposite the Westerplatte (an area containing Polish troop barracks and workshops) and at 4.47 am, the order to 'Fire' was given.

The American black bear is found only in North America. The population is estimated at 750,000. They live in forests as far south as Florida and northern Mexico and as far north as forests grow in Alaska and Canada. In northern Labrador, where grizzly bears no longer live, black bears range out onto open tundra where there are no trees to escape into. People are becoming more tolerant of black bears as we learn more about them. Many people are enjoying having bears live close to them where the bears were once feared and killed.

On an American one-dollar bill there is a tiny owl in the upper-left-hand corner of the upper-right-hand "1" and a spider hidden in the front upper-right-hand corner.

Champagne was originally invented in Britain in the 17th century, by adding sugar and mollases to wine. Dom Perignon actually hated the bubbles and spent his life trying to remove them. Ironic considering the fame of Dom Perignon champagne.

Hilton Head Is, SC is the only place in the world where Dolphins "mooch". that is where they corral schools of fish, and force them on land with a wave...Once the fish are beached, the dolphins then beach themselves, eat the fish, and slip back into the water.

I actually saw this:)

Over 2500 left handed people a year are killed from using products made for right handed people. "Left" in Latin is "sinister" and "right" is "dexter". Ambidextrous simply means "both right".

In Peru, the Aztecs worshiped sunflowers. They placed sunflower images made of gold in their temples, and crowned princesses in the bright yellow flowers.

The Aztecs also used to practise a sport very similiar to basketball, only with human heads.

The F-word originated in England. When couples got married, people used to hang signs on thier doors the first night after the wedding with the letters "F.U.C.K." which stood for "Fornicating Under Consent of King".

Hitler started a campaign to create the perfect race - 6ft tall, blonde hair, blue eyes although he was shorter than 6ft, had brown hair and brown eyes.

Sushi (made from pufferfish) Is prepared by only the most professional chefs that went through elite training in preparing this specific dish.

The recipe that coca cola originated from was actually a herb medicine which contained real coke (by the milligram, not millilitres) :tu:

There are a species of frogs in north america that contains a highly effective narcotic in thier skin. (my apologies for not stating species name... i 4got) Licking the skin of such an frog can induce a "high" greater than the effects of spiking 6shots heroin.

The poison dart frog in south america has enough toxins in its skin to kill 1500 people.

The phrase "bless you" originated from medieval times when people thought that every time you sneezed a demon was trying to posess you.

They also believed that when you had a runny nose your brains were leaking...

The date September 11 has been burned into our memories as the day the World Trade Centre was attacked by Al-Qaeda.

Yet it is a little known fact that if you say 9/11 to a Chilean, the response would be just as tragic, yet totally different. On September 11, 1971, some of the largest acts of genocide in history were carried out as literally hundreds of thousand of people were herded into football stadiums and massacred as armed soldiers shot the crowd dead.

---------------------------------------------------------

Next time you think 9/11, spare a thought for those affected by these tragic events.

Regards, PA

In Yugoslavia, on the second Sunday before Christmas, children creep in and tie their mother's feet to a chair, shouting 'Mother's Day, Mother's Day, what will you pay to get away?' Surprisingly, she then gives them presents. Children play the same trick on their father the following week and the children get more presents. Unfortunately, parents don't get to do the same to their children the week after.

^ Most parents would pay their child just to stay tied for that day as their present. ^_^

The different colors of wine are due to leaving or removing the grapeskins during pressing. White wines have the skin removed whereas reds are made with the skins.
