QuantumE Posted December 18, 2005 #1 Share Posted December 18, 2005 Computer viruses! I hate em, you hate em, we all hate em! Where did they come from? Bored computer nerds trying to mess things up? Perhaps a few, but how did it really come about? Im gonna give you a hint The best way to take advantage of a situation; behind closed doors mind you, is too create a problem, and then offer a solution. Thats right! A buncha people had an idea, lets create computer viruses and then create a program to counter it! We'll make millions!!!!! Cha Ching! Next time you enjoy running your weekly virus scan from norton or whatever you have, just think of them laughing at us all while raking in the cash and how they fooled everyone! Yelekiah Posted December 18, 2005 #2 Share Posted December 18, 2005 I have to admit that's pretty clever. Money is usually the major principle.
Mr. Blonde Posted December 18, 2005 #3 Share Posted December 18, 2005 I always thought that computers were made with bugs n glitches purposly put in so you'd have to upgrade, buy new parts, what have you.
cryztalwing Posted December 18, 2005 #4 Share Posted December 18, 2005 (edited) the first computer virus was a simple program that maid a ball apper on the computer screen to annoy the user. than the first big out break of computer virus's was the stone virus in the 80's. they are those who make computer virus's for the soul purpose of ripping people of. Those viru's are the downloader trojan's, that use's the computer's modlem's to make long distence phone call's to adult entertanment phone line's that charg's money per minet..also back door trojan's that let's others to steal personal info.. Money 2. Power Virusses were written for the sole purpose of creating a new industry and i'll give it to norton and the rest of the anti virus programmers, they brought quite a big industry to life. Think of it logically. Norton warns about a new type of virus on the loose and they are the only ones at that given moment to offer you complete protection... vertigoflow Posted December 20, 2005 #6 Share Posted December 20, 2005 I heard the anti-virus industry has software that can recognize new viruses by looking for certain patterns present in all virus-like programs without needing to be updated. They don't release this software because their business model is dependent on people subscribing for updates, but they use it one their own computers. Lord Umbarger Posted December 20, 2005 #7 Share Posted December 20, 2005 I wouldn't doubt it, Vertigo. They make money by keeping thier computers running. That's why our computers crash and the ones at places like IBM never do. I don't know it for a fact but, I would not doubt it for a minute. Yona Posted December 27, 2005 #12 Share Posted December 27, 2005 No man, home pc crash because they are filled with buggy programs, buggy software, and more then likely, buggy hardware. the main thing to remember is that if the corporations really didn't want viruses, guess what, there would be no viruses. Unforgiven Posted January 9, 2006 #13 Share Posted January 9, 2006 (edited) Windows is unstable, IBM isn't nor is Mac. Show me a stable computer - I'll show you a computer that isn't used. Show me an unstable computer - I'll show you a computer that is abused. Computers only do what the software designers tell 'em to do. But as software designers are human - well we know how many mistakes humans make... More people use Windows, so naturally, more people are gonna find issues. No man, home pc crash because they are filled with buggy programs, buggy software, and more then likely, buggy hardware. the main thing to remember is that if the corporations really didn't want viruses, guess what, there would be no viruses. Sad but True Though there would still be malicious program writers. I heard the anti-virus industry has software that can recognize new viruses by looking for certain patterns present in all virus-like programs without needing to be updated. I've heard something like this: I think the problem with the software would be is the way viruses "spread" themselves is similiar to the way the auto-update works - that's speculation not fact, though. Say this software gets released: The patterns would change. These coders are sadly more intelligent than your average programmer and have a habit of finding ways around things. Chris_com28 Posted January 9, 2006 #14 Share Posted January 9, 2006 I'm not sure about big companies like Norton using the Hagelian Prinicple but I'm sure others do this. I even got a pop-up from a company warning me of PC infections when it had to infect my PC anyway to give me that message. Ok, is ad-ware and spyware categorised as a virus? adkchamp Posted January 9, 2006 #15 Share Posted January 9, 2006 my friend who is a computer nerd pull some **** off me. So i gave him my PC to get an video card update and some new programs. When i got it back with a week running on it, the **** has a virus and i cant fix it with the anti-virus programs i have (McAfee and Norton). Then my friend said he can fix it if i PAY him. I told ok, so he fixed it like he knew whats going on......I DIDNt pay jack cause i knew he was doing this for business...its true
gothikchile13 Posted January 9, 2006 #16 Share Posted January 9, 2006 Look guys, viruses usually come from 1 of 2 places: email and porn. Now, your friends don't send you viruses, so it's from an email from an unknown source (shouldn't open anyway). Then porn, well, most of the time, it says "Click Yes if you are 18" in a little pop-up, and that's just retarded to believe. --Jon
zukie&jim Posted January 10, 2006 #17 Share Posted January 10, 2006 (edited) you seem to forget mallware and spyware. i wouldn't doute it much that MS or other software providers unleash some viruses and what not just to cause problems they can solve with new and expensive programs. just take win 2000pro and run it on some stable hardware without it being on the net or being exposed to viruses and what not and the darned thing will run forever without a hiccup--lol best thing i know to do is not run internet explorer --try firefox 1.5 or some other browser--sure you'll still pick up a bug now and then--but everybody's trying to hack native windows stuff. that darned msn-messenger --got lots of flaws that can let things into your system too. try major geeks.com--they got some freeware that helps. gothikchile13 Posted January 10, 2006 #18 Share Posted January 10, 2006 (edited) Now that I think about it, the biggest problem is Microsoft. Example: "Microsoft just announced a bug in their operating system Windows XP, this bug is blah blah blah". Meanwhile, somewhere in a basement in the suburbs, some nerd is furiousley m********ing while writing a virus that could potentially take down huge corporations with the title "Do you like cake?" See how things get out of hand? True story, except the story was "slightly altered". --Jon Edited January 10, 2006 by gothikchile13
<bleeding_heart> Posted January 10, 2006 #19 Share Posted January 10, 2006 (edited) I heard the anti-virus industry has software that can recognize new viruses by looking for certain patterns present in all virus-like programs without needing to be updated. They don't release this software because their business model is dependent on people subscribing for updates, but they use it one their own computers. Heuristic scanning and it is released to end users, the problem is this kind of detection can cause false-positives and still needs to be updated. The AV industry probably does have more advanced technologies inhouse but a home pc and most company networks would be incapable of running them. Ok, is ad-ware and spyware categorised as a virus? Virus', Spyware, Adware, Trojans, Dialers, Foistware, Worms etc are all different things that can cross over into each other and generally come under the term malware. That's why our computers crash and the ones at places like IBM never do. If you or anyone else spends billions on their computers and networks and it still doesnt work near perfectly the problem isnt with the hardware or software. Norton warns about a new type of virus on the loose and they are the only ones at that given moment to offer you complete protection... Symantec have amongst the most researchers, programmers, advanced technologies and resources of any AV company (probably the most).
