~Albatross~

Doubtful.

This crazy old woman has been spewing out the same vague predictions for decades.

She makes a crapload of predictions (maybe 200 at a time) and then screams with orgasmic joy as 5% of them come true while ignoring the other 95% that didn't.

Then spends the next two years boasting and gloating to the scientific community and the skeptics.

To the folks out there who believe this psychic rubbish, and let me put this as delicately as I can: Its all bulls***.

Well, I can't believe I just wasted two or three hours online doing this, but I was waiting for my friend in Scotland to wake up and log on to chat, so . . .

I found a list of Sylvia Browne's 2005 predictions here and have done my best to track down whether or not they came true. Green is for correct predictions, red is for incorrect or seriously flawed predictions. My findings are in bold. When the event that has been "predicted" came before the prediction I also put my findings in italics.

Like I say, I was wasting time. :P

These predictions were apparently made on December 30, 2004.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2004

Sylvia Browne's 2005 Predictions From Montel Show

* Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn will split

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn's split was announced publicly more than a month before this prediction was made! At this point it was already a done deal.

Source

* Ditto for Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston

Correct. Separation first leaked to the media on January 8, 2005, however there had been speculation in the entertainment community for months that their marriage was on the rocks.

Source

* "Problems" in Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones' marriage

Undetermined. If there are, no word has leaked that I can find.

* Demi Moore will have a bun in the oven

Correct. Announced in mid-March.

* Ditto for Britney Spears, though she'll be single again by this time

next year

Correct on the baby. Still married, but marriage is reportedly on the rocks.

* Robert Blake will be cleared in his wife's murder

Correct

* Another marriage for Donald Trump, but he'll be single again in

about two years

Like the Hawn - Russell breakup, I'm giving this one a big wrong, even though Trump did marry during the year 2005. He and his third wife Melania had been living together for five years, engaged since April, 2004, and had announced their wedding date (January 21, 2005) in November of 2004. She still has time on the second half of the prediction, though.

* Sylvia is "concerned about" Elizabeth Taylor "making it through 2005

-- she's given up; she said she's ready to go"

As far as I can tell, this "prediction" is echoing rumors about Taylor's health that were prevalent at the time, but were apparently unfounded.

* Michael Jackson will spend time in jail

Wrong.

Sylvia's other predictions:

* Scandal at the FDA over the drug approval process

Again, the Vioxx scandal pre-dated the prediction!

* A liquor-related scandal in the Bush Administration

Wrong -- that's about the only kind of scandal they haven't had this year.

* The US will be out of Iraq by mid-year, but we'll be at war with

North Korea within two years

Wrong about Iraq, she still has time on the North Korea part of it.

* An economic downturn in the first half of the year, but recovery in

the second half, fueled by developments in medical technology

I'll leave this question for someone more versed than I in economics.

* Real estate is a better investment than stocks, though "medical

stocks" should do well in 2005

I don't even know enough about the stock market to look this up. Anyone?

* No national ban on same-sex marriage -- rather, it'll gradually gain approval in each state

No national ban (yet) but hardly gaining approval as several states have banned it.

And there you have it! :D And now, I'd like to make a prediction:

I predict that I'm going to go to bed now. :sleepy:

She was wrong on most of the 2005 predictions. She makes educated guesses and nothing more. What a fraud.

I thought these were predictions for 2006... a few are in 2008, 2010...

heh, okay enough of my nitpicking here, as Elfstone already said, a lot of these 'predictions' aren't predictions. they're already true, long before she 'predicted' them.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm curious as to where you found the 2006 predictions? Did they also come off the Montel show?

  • 9 months later...

I was going to say that. Oh well. We have to see who she marries.

And not a single thing hit NYC! So that didn't come true.

And of course, she gets her truck prediction related to a story on a large concentration of muslims in a city in Kansas, I forget which.. Taking truck driving courses. This has been reported though since many months ago. This is what she does, she looks for small things like this from educated professionals, and tells what she thinks based on that. According to her, letterman's show was supposed to end 6 years ago :sleepy:

After all these years people still make a big deal out of Sylvia Brown?

Well, everyone seems to have forgotten the number one prediction that she makes every year that comes true. People with low I.Q.'s will continue to buy her books and the Enquiror will continue pay her for articles of her earth shaking "predictions".

When they refer to her as the "most successful psychic of our time" they are not referring to her accuracy. They are referring to her quarterly financial statements. This has less to do with her so-called "enlightenment" and far more to do with her "personal enrichment".
