Five others were wounded in the attack on Swami Sadanand Sant Gyaneshwar late Friday near the city of Allahabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh, said Surendra Srivastava, a police spokesman in Lucknow, the state capital. "The killers used sophisticated weapons, including an AK-47, in the operation," Srivastava said. Gyaneshwar was returning to his ashram near the Hindu holy city of Varanasi, 185 miles southeast of Lucknow, when he and his followers were attacked. Police were questioning residents in the area. Gyaneshwar was a popular religious leader with several religious retreats across Uttar Pradesh.
