Chavez threatens to stop shipping oil to U.S.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warned he could cut off oil to the United States if Washington goes "over the line" in what he has said are attempts to destabilize his left-leaning government.

Chavez made his threat Friday, a day after U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the Venezuelan government posed "one of the biggest problems" in the region and that its ties to Cuba were "dangerous" to democracy in Latin America.

Questions:

Why is the U.S. Secretary of State worried about democracy in Latin America? Shouldn't she be more concerned about what is left of democracy in her own country?

What are your thoughts?

HAHA i hope they dont ship the oil!

Actually, I am not concerned about the oil, either. I am more concerned with this absent-minded prying into other countries' business, trying to act as the world saviour. Maybe, just maybe these people do not need to be "saved".

Why?! Because of the actions of the US government which you dont agree with. This would affect the people of America quite gravely and I`m sure the response of the US government would not be pleasant for Venezuela or its moronic president.

The actions of the "US government" and the actions of the individual "Condoleeza Rice" are 2 separate things.

This is one of the reasons Chavez is the 'biggest threat' to the US' definition of 'democracy'. What the US cannot have, which is also the reason for the continued aggression in the middle-east, is any challenge to the petrodollar. Ever since the Gold Standard was dropped, the mandatory use of the dollar as the medium for trade in oil (the petrodollar), is the only thing that gives the illusion that the US dollar any real value. Iraq dropped the Dollar in favour of the Euro and we know what happened to them. Since the war they have reverted back to the dollar. Iran are planning to stop trading oil using the dollar in favour of a Euro-based Iranian Bourse in March, which is probably the reason they will be subjected to military action.

Chavez is painted as a nutter, or a 'moron' by the biased US media because they don't agree with his opposition to US foreign policy and his own socialist plans.

An example of the irrationality of the US is the fact that top Republicans in the House of Representatives attacked Venezeula's offer to provide cheap heating oil to poor US communities saying it was "part of an unfriendly government's increasingly belligerent and hostile foreign policy towards the US".

The republicans are damn right if you ask me, we can't have poor people getting stuff cheap now, can we?!

I agree fully. That is irrational.. and hypocritical, considering what those drunk Republicans are attempting to do now.

"Venezuela or its moronic president"

that same president offered to foot the bill for american medical care, essentially giving free medical care to everyone in the country. Chavez and castro should have bush snr. killed.

Altough, this topic should remain in respect to the original questions...

Condoleeza Rice? Yes, that is the question.

Well, that is what I meant. Democracy doesn't mean the same thing to them as it does to us. The 'devil in a blue dress' as I call her, is merely a minion enforcing US dominance. Her comments came a week or two after diplomatic steps were taken to improve relations with Venezeula. Obviously someone had their wires crossed and overstepped the mark - 'fraternizing with the enemy'.

The breakdown of democracy in the US is in the current administrations interests.

I bet that's your toy in your avatar. :)

Venezuela supplies up to 15% of US oil imports and the US purchases up to 60% of Venezuela's oil output. Why do you think the US are throwing their toys out of their prams coz Chavez won't play ball?

You seem pretty reasonable REJ so I'm not even going to bother fact checking those #'s. So we fund more than Half of their oil exports and anything bought in that country with that revenue is thanks to the USA... for only 15% of our total... sounds like we're doing them a favor... and he whines and threatens.

A large part of our country is in a perpetual state of rude awakening or are in that state just before the rude awakening. The only constant, is change. "normal" way of life is always changing. :)

What sort of rude awakening are you referring to? The only rude awakening I am waiting for is when you guys realise how corrupt your government is, and the stranglehold corporations have on your nation. Hey! I could have been a rapper! :D

If countries start ditching the petrodollar - others would probably follow suit in droves and that could collapse the US economy - big time!!

Ditching the dollar is what makes you an enemy of the US and apparently evil.
