TEHRAN, Feb 26 (Reuters) - More than 500 protesters angered by the destruction of a Shi'ite Muslim shrine in Iraq gathered outside the British Embassy in Tehran on Sunday, burning flags and calling for the mission to be closed.

Iran accused Western forces in Iraq of orchestrating Wednesday's bombing of the Golden Mosque of Samarra, one of the most venerated buildings in Shi'ite Islam, in order to spark civil war between Shi'ites and Sunnis.

Western nations condemned the attack and Washington suggested the al Qaeda network could have been trying to stir up sectarian bloodshed through the bombing.

The crowd in Tehran chanted that the British Embassy should be shut down and burned Danish and U.S. flags.

"We are all here to defend Islam to the last drop of our blood," said protester Hassan Moradkhani, dressed in a Palestinian headscarf.

The United States has no embassy in Iran so protesters enraged by events in Iraq usually focus their wrath on close U.S. ally Britain.

In recent weeks crowds of hardline students have attacked European embassies in Tehran in response to newspaper cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad.

The cartoons, which first appeared in Denmark, caused offence because many Muslims believe representation of the Prophet is blasphemous. Many also found the tone offensive, appearing to show Mohammad as a terrorist.

"Publishing cartoons and bombing shrines is all part of a U.S. and Zionist conspiracy to divide Muslims but the Islamic community

Yup!

Look how you guys jump to conclusions. There is nothing in the article about violence. They set cloth on fire and that is it.

It is also likely that there were Sunni's and Shi'tes there, united against the allied forces - the real terrorists who more than likely are responsible for the bombing of the Mosque.

Protesters hurl petrol bombs at UK Embassy

TEHRAN: More than 1,200 conservative students angered by the destruction of a Shia Muslim shrine in Iraq hurled petrol bombs, stones and eggs at the British Embassy in Tehran on Sunday.

In a separate demonstration earlier in the day, some 500 protesters had already burned flags and called for the embassy to be shut down. It was not clear whether the second demonstration was entirely composed of fresh protesters.

Iran has accused Western forces in Iraq of orchestrating Wednesday’s bombing of the Golden Mosque of Samarra, one of the most venerated buildings in Shia Islam, in order to spark civil war between Shia and Sunnis. Western nations condemned the attack, and Washington suggested the Al Qaeda network could have been trying to stir up sectarian bloodshed through the bombing.

A Reuters journalist at the second demonstration said that the crowd had thrown six petrol bombs, chanting “Death to the two Satans, Britain and America!” and “Shut down the British Embassy!”

A student leader, shouting through a megaphone, vowed that the students would do everything in their power to harm Western political and economic interests in Iran. “The agents of global arrogance should know that their security and political and economic interests will be in danger,” he said. “In particular, the ambassador of this corrupt embassy will not be safe in our streets.” The United States has no embassy in Iran, so protesters enraged by events in Iraq usually focus their wrath on Britain, a close ally of Washington.

In recent weeks, crowds of hard line students have attacked European embassies in Tehran in response to newspaper cartoons that first appeared in Denmark, depicting the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). “Publishing cartoons and bombing shrines is all part of a US and Zionist conspiracy to divide Muslims, but the Islamic community is aware of what they are up to,” said 26-year-old demonstrator Maryam Hajizadeh. reuters

I spy with my little eye, another contradicting statement.

Accusing others of jumping to conclusions.....and then jumping to conclusions yourself.

This is what it is, a bunch of Zephyrites with nothing better to do than point the ugly finger of blame at westerners without any justification whatsoever.

( :w00t: "Zephyrite" - definately my word of the day :tu: )

Edit:

There is nothing in the article about violence.

Petrol bombs violent enough for you?

Zephyrite - LOL!

Well, at the time I was right about the absence of violence. I guess it was only a matter of time before protests turned ugly.

I am not jumping to any conclusions - that has been my opinion since the day it happened, based on the facts of the incidents.

Why are Sunni + Shia leaders calling on their numbers not to retaliate, to unite and realise who's really responsible?

Friction between the two, has been relatively low.

Well, technically no you were still wrong, we just didn't know you were wrong yet.

Isn't that exactly what jumping to conclusions is? I think so.

Why are Sunni + Shia leaders calling on their numbers not to retaliate, to unite and realise who's really responsible?

They have been called to unite and fight against terrorism, not the west, and it was your friend and mine good ol' Dubya that asked them to do it.

I really don't see what the US or the UK would have to gain from a civil war... All it would do is upset the American people even more. The majority is already fed up with the war & we Americans have little patience & even less of an attention span. The idea that America bombed the shrine is ridiculus & the idea is speculations based on no evidence. Iran is just trying to make the West out to be the bad guys. Any country opening denying the Holocaust happened & wants another country "wiped off the map" should be watched carefully.
