Open Letter to Blair from war bereaved

Dear Mr Blair, why are you afraid to meet us?

As two more British soldiers die in Iraq, The Independent publishes an open letter from bereaved relatives to the Prime Minister

Published: 01 March 2006

Dear Prime Minister,

We, the undersigned, have each known the pain of losing someone very close to us in the war in Iraq. All of them, Mr Blair, were proud to serve their country, and always knew and accepted that their duty could take them into danger. They always had faith, though, that no British prime minister would ever commit them to fight in an unjustified war.

The bravery of our sons, husbands, fathers, brothers could never be in any doubt. It cost them their lives in pursuit of a war that you so strongly supported. Some of us believed in the war at the outset; others not. All of us now, though, believe it was based on a series of lies - your lies.

Too many lives have been lost in the war, soldiers and Iraqis, and still there is no end in sight. We feel passionately that it is time to bring our troops home. We will be supporting the Troops Out demonstration on 18 March.

We would, of course, like the chance to say all this to you in person. As you know, we have sought meetings with you, to no avail. That seems to us a serious dereliction of your responsibilities. If you truly believe your policies, and the continuing need for the presence of British servicemen and women in Iraq, you should surely have the courage to face the families of those who have paid the ultimate price, and to explain them to us.

In the midst of the most terrible grief, we have tried at all times to conduct ourselves with dignity. Even as two more families endure the agony of loss all of us know so well, we hope our letter today requesting a meeting might give you pause for thought, and to reconsider. It is time for you to take us and our views seriously. We believe we speak for the majority in this country in our desire to bring the troops home. We ask you to treat us with respect.

Yours sincerely[.....]

We should support the troops, by bringing them home and reducing the chance of them dying for a lie!!

Bush and Blair are liars and the troops should come home now.

Why don't they do as this young lady suggested and let the Iraqi's vote on whether the troops should leave, seeing as they are a 'democracy' now?

dunno where your from british or not.

but ya see i honestly dont doubt blair's intentions in the war on iraq. people say hes a liar , a murdered , with blood on his hads.

to that i say well for a good many years before iraq he never gave us any reason to worry about his integrity or leadership skills.#

im not saying he didnt lie to us , i believe he knew that what he was telling us wasnt entirely true .

i think he honestly believed that for the greater good in the long run he had to sensationalised the situation. i think he honestly believed that iraq needed to be dealth with and i honestly believe that he thought saddam wouldve built WMD's or sold the technology on to whoever was our enemy.

he has nothing to gain personally , he knew the flak he would get , especialy in the UK. He isnt an oil baron unlike bush his family isnt involved with major oil companies and he doesnnt rely on multi-national companies to bankroll his party like the republicans.

most people seem to be attributing somekind of personal economic gain for blair due to us being at war.

i say to them , What personal gain?

he had to join the americans, they were goin in with or without us, we are not only their ally but we also make sure they use restrain that i suspect had blair not had bush's ear they would not have used.

we all thought shock and awe was terrible and completley excessive, can you imagine if the americans ( and i mean the hawks ) had been left to their own devices , to plan the war themselves.

i also think that the war in Iraq was a mistake although had the aftermath been handled better i do beleiev a positive outcome couldve been reached with greater ease.

Is that really a good idea? With feelings as they are in Iraq right now is it worth risking civil war? If our troops left Iraq now does anyone honestly beleive the fighting would stop?

You'd just leave a whole bunch of Sunni's and Shia's together in a country where they hate each other, and more civilians would die. Is that young lady prepared to take responsibility for that? I'm sure her intentions are good, but she really needs to think her statements through before she starts advising countries on how they should or should not deploy their troops.

Of course it won't stop, infact it would probably make the situation worse out there if our troops did pull out.

They always had faith, though, that no British prime minister would ever commit them to fight in an unjustified war.

I have the greatest respect and admiration for our men and women out there. However to me this letter is just another part of the anti-Blair campaign blaming him for loss of lives. It is a tragedy, a complete nightmare, when we lose loved ones but this is what these people in our troops chose to do. It is their duty to go to war justified or otherwise, they were not forced by anyone. I am sure too that they would know the riskd involved and that there was a chance they may not come back. These are extremely brave and courageous individuals but to blame this on one man when they had and made the choice is ludicrous.

US goverment made it look like if they leave a civil war will begin. Acctualy there is no reason for civil war , they(Iraqis) know that US secret service is responsible for most of terror acts.

:P

Some will disagree with war no matter how valid the cause. They just don't see war as a necessity, ever. I like Tony Blair, he didn't lie. Nobody in their right mind should have believed that leaving Sadam in power would have been a good idea.

Absolutely not.

The oil corporations call the shots and they want as much peace as possible for higher profit margins.

To think otherwise is just being caught up in hysteria and/or bias.

Saddam has been out of his power for a long time now but the oil fields are still the real power there.

People in America stopped buying French produce because they didnt support the war , after 3 years the French were right about the rights of going to war , i think America should apologise to a Country who saw what was happening and decided to stay out of it . I wish Britain had done the same.

allied forces are only there to guard oil extractions and ensure democratic elections never take place in iraq as this would pass the oil reserves back into the hands of the Iraqi people.

But i dont actually agree with heads of state visiting familys of deceased servicemen. Their family members were in the army, thats kinda reality of what happens when you join the army, think its a coincidence they just happen to train you how to kill with a rifle? what did their familys expect exactly?

Plus bush would have to visit a good 17,000 people personaly. it isnt really feasible.
