UM-Bot Posted March 26, 2006 #1 Share Posted March 26, 2006 A New Zealand university's research has suggested a 243-year-old map indicating a famous Chinese explorer discovered New Zealand, Australia and America before Europeans is probably not a fake. Waikato Times reported Saturday that Waikato University carbon-dating shows that "there might be something in a theory that the Chinese discovered New Zealand before Europeans. SolarThinker Posted March 26, 2006 #2 Share Posted March 26, 2006 Always interesting when we find evidence that we may have gotten history all wrong.
Grandpa Greenman Posted March 26, 2006 #3 Share Posted March 26, 2006 The idea that Columbus discovered is very euro-centric view of the world. The new world was discovered by the people who were living there. New Zealand, Australia had people living there, too. Europeans were late comers on the seen. The only thing they did was open the opportunity for trade and exploitation.
Oderint Posted March 26, 2006 #4 Share Posted March 26, 2006 people still actually believe that columbus "discovered" America? Even the vikings were before him, and most likely others were before them. Why doesn't it count that there were people living in america before columbus "found" it? Clobhair-cean Posted March 26, 2006 #5 Share Posted March 26, 2006 Yes, this is the thing I can't undersand... Who cares about the Chinese having a 70-year lead before Colombus when Leif Eriksson and the Vikings were there four centuries earlier as the first outsiders in America... Sharm Posted March 27, 2006 #9 Share Posted March 27, 2006 I read somewhere (can't remember the exact link) people from the Malay Archipelago visited the American continent thousands of years ago. They visited the Mayan, Aztec and Incan civilisations and brought home sweet potato and maize. The journey took 4 months. The didn't go any further because the see the American continent as a 'wall' stretching from north to south.
