Tommy Posted September 26, 2003 #2 Share Posted September 26, 2003 I agree Darkstar, I pressed on the link expecting to read something about a hurricane, and ended up reading about some earthquake.
Benjo Koolzooie Posted September 26, 2003 #3 Share Posted September 26, 2003 I agree Darkstar, I pressed on the link expecting to read something about a hurricane, and ended up reading about some earthquake. I saw this on the news, it was talkin about an earthquake, and mentioned that big tidal waves could possibly be on the way.
Cufflink Posted September 26, 2003 #4 Share Posted September 26, 2003 I've been following this one on the news, guys. Damage was surprisingly minimal, considering the magnitude, and the Japanese scientists have said that, despite the quake being off-shore, no tidal wave has emerged. Worryingly, Tokyo, according to seismologists, is long overdue a biggie, and every smaller quake in the area could herald it's arrival.
lil_kanga77 Posted September 26, 2003 #5 Share Posted September 26, 2003 Don't they call them tsunami's?
Cufflink Posted September 26, 2003 #6 Share Posted September 26, 2003 Don't they call them tsunami's? Yup. Big waves, if my Japanese is correct. Kanga, Oz is quite close by to Japan. Do you get earthquakes there, or is the fault line sat underneath the poor Japanese?
lil_kanga77 Posted September 26, 2003 #7 Share Posted September 26, 2003 Cufflink, it's very rare and if we do have one they tend to be very minor with no evidence of there really ever being one. However, several years ago there was a large one (well, larger than normal and with damage) in Newcastle which is on the East coast of Australia. From my perspective, the main problem tends to be the cyclones. Our only other "disasters" are bush fires, tropical storms and flash flooding. Other Aussies on this forum may dispute that, though. Blimey, Kanga, don't you think that's enough?! Tough bunch, these Aussies...
Scorpius Posted December 30, 2003 #9 Share Posted December 30, 2003 If this earthquake measure 8 on the Richter scale, why didn't it create more damage than what had actually occured. I'd also think that tsunamis would be produced from the tectonic plates undersea. Why didn't this occur? Where are the scientists?
