Birmingham Posted May 8, 2006 #1 Share Posted May 8, 2006 As a former member of the Titanic Historical Society, I thought I'd memtion this. Lillian Gertrud Asplund died Saturday at her home in Shrewsbury, Massachussetts, USA. She was 99 years old. Miss Asplund was the last American survivor of the sinking of the Royal Mail Ship Titanic in 1912 when she was 5 years old. Asplund lost her father and 3 brothers in the sinking. She, her mother and one brother survived the sinking after the Titanic hit an iceburg on the early morning of April 15, 1912. Ironicly her mother Selma, died in 1964 on the same date, the 52nd anniversary of the disaster. Her brother Felix died in 1983. Asplund was credited with being the last survivor with memories of the accident. The other two known survivors, Barbara Joyce West Dainton of Truro was 10 months old and Elizabeth Gladys "Millivina" Dean of Southhampton was 2 months old and had no memories of the disaster.
