I don't know if any of you have been following the California recall election, but the results are in and Arnold Schwarzenegger has won.

His web page

Specific election results and numbers

It will be interesting to see if he can pull California out of it's disasterous economic crisis. Some other interesting tidbits about this election:

In a predominately Democratic state, Republican votes out-weighed Democrat votes on a ratio of 2-1. (Source:CNN)

News sources have reported that 1 in 4 Democrats voted for Arnold.(Source:Fox)

Yes Pale_Horse, I followed very closely. I am a political animal at heart. Thanks for the links.

Now it's fun time, watching the pundits twist, turn and spin.

All ready Jessie Jackson is screaming "disenfranchised voters", it was the largest turn out in California history whistling2.gif Peter Jennings says it wasn't a victory for Schwarzenegger, it was a defeat for Davis huh.gif I guess when someone hits the lottery it isn't a win for the lucky ticket holder, it's a loss for all the rest laugh.gif and Chris Matthews is spouting that this is bad for Bush. Reason: it is a rejection of incumbants, jeeze, talk about a stretch.

Thanks again thumbsup.gif

Another funny note. CNN had an article on the election which featured the quote:

"Schwarzenegger, who, like Hitler, is a native of Austria..."

CNN later changed the wording. The revised article is here.

But fortunately, copies of the original article have been used by other news outlets and remain unchanged.

See the original article here.

Some unbiased media reporting, huh? rolleyes.gif

The left-wing media smear against Arnie was so blatant, we even spotted it over here. Isn't it strange how the dirtiest campaigns are always run by "liberals" and "democrats", who by their actions seem to be against free speech or voter choice!

Justice was done, and it's good to see that Californians can make up their own minds.

Go Arnie! gunsmilie.gif

Here's another story which should put to rest the ridiculous allegations of Arnold's supposed NAZI sympathies.

Hell, if you head up Indiana way, I'll buy you one, or two, or three, or four...... wink2.gif

By the way, my favorite quote of the recall/election:

"All I can say to Arnold, hasta la vista baby, you're not going to be around on Election Day ... This campaign is just beginning."

-- California Democratic Party Chairman Art Torres

Mr Torres must be feeling a bit of a wally right now. grin2.gif

It's a good day for democracy when such a vile smear campaign fails so badly.

I'm chuffed for the big man. grin2.gif

I thought we already did, Horse, matey. grin2.gif

And J6, have one for me. wink2.gif

Tut tut. How blatant. Even a child would see through such a stupid statement. How bizarre.

Well...better choice of leadership than the presidential election anyway...

Arnold's stats: Popular world wide, natural charisma, nobody will ever reply with "Who?" if you say you're a fan of him.

Bush's stats: Has an official IQ of 91...

The fact that he's not from the US means he's never gonna be elected president of course, but I say good for California...just a matter now of seeing how he does, because you can pretty much bet, because of his fame, that the press will be keeping an very close eye on every move he makes...

On a side note, the nazi thing was stupid...hell, even I think it's amazing/frightening how Hitler went from nothing to being one of the most important men in history...doesn't make me a nazi, and doesn't mean I don't think he was an evil crack pot tongue.gif

Exactly. That's how corrupt the liberal media has become. A throw-away remark from a bodybuilder back in the 1970's about the one admirable achievement of that monster Hitler, and suddenly, it's breaking news.

I remember a BBC nine O'clock news headline from the early nineties. Newsreader Michael Burke's opening lines were, "The Tories are to scrap pensions", (thus causing the desired emotional response),"say a Labour party report". So, basically, they weren't scrapping pensions. But the points had been scored for Labour, and Burke and the rest of the liberal BBC news team had deliberately done their damage.

The Arnie/Hitler CNN remark is on the same level. The gutter, that is.

Just wait for Michael Portillo to run for Tory Leadership again. Watch for all those stories that "suddenly" emerge.

Unfortunatly, I think that it will get worse before it gets any better. I have no doubt that in the near future, media outlets will actually start endorsing canidates. disgust.gif

just a quick reply to the above...

Predictable response. The old bogeymen, the Tories. Ah, bless. laugh.gif

Even a corrupt left-wing media that misuses it's power?

I wasn't making a political statement on who we happen to support.

Perhaps we should do away with our freedom to vote? Just let those wise people who choose TV journalism as a career path decide how our country should be run?

What if one day these unelected kingmakers set out to destroy someone you support, or something you believe in?

I could use a little help here in order to understand the conversation. Could some one give me a comparison of the English to the American political parties?

I understand that Tony Blair is in the liberal party and that Margaret Thatcher was a conservative but that's where my understanding ends.

We (USA) have the Republicans who tend to be conservative and the Democrats who lean liberal. The Jewish, minority (mainly black), union labor and senior citizens usually vote Democrat. Business, middle class, Christian, and upper middle class go Republican. Of coarse politics is local so these descriptions aren't cut in stone they are a generalization but the following are pretty much rock solid descriptions: Libertarians lean more to the (right) conservative and the Green party leans way left (liberal) and moderates, I really don't know where they are. I'm not sure that they even know where their core is.

Well that's about it in a nutshell. Now who are the Tories and what other major parties have power in England. Are the Tories conservative? Is the Labor party liberal?

Hi J6, I'll give you the brief low down.

The Labour Party, Tony Blair's lot, are the ruling party, and the equivalent of the Democrats in the states. They forged very close links during the Blair/Clinton years. They are just left-of centre, and style themselves very much on Clinton's Democrats, much to the annoyance of the old style Labour members, who have their roots, like the party, in socialist worker's movements.

The Conservatives, or Tories, for short, are like the Republicans, and are currently in opposition. They are the party the Iron Lady used to lead.

The Liberal Democrats are our third party. They used to be a safe, centre-leftist party, but under the extremely left wing leadership of Charles Kennedy, an old school socialist, they now sit on the far left of Labour, politically.

We also have Plaid Cymru (the party of Wales), and the SNP (Scottish national party), who naturally have their power bases in their respective countries.

*phew* Hope that helps. Personally, I still get my senators and congressmen mixed-up. But I'm learning. wink2.gif

Nothing to do with anything the media says...more to do with how much they screwed up the country...thanks to Thatcher's absolutely horrible job as PM, the chances are we won't see another woman prime minister for a long time to come (at least until we get the bad taste out of our mouths).

I am a corrupt left winger by the way tongue.gif Although I don't vote labour (I'm scottish, I'll give you three guesses who I vote for). I'm not a big fan of labour, but I do actually get pretty sick sometimes reading what the papers print about them...every single week there are stabs at Tony Blair over the war in Iraq, the Hutton Inquirery, and an insane amount of other issues that, to be honest, just don't merit the kind of abuse he's getting...I do think the guy messed up, but all the same I do think we're better off than we were under Major, and they should lay off the guy....I guarentee, I'm far from influenced by whatever the press is telling me.

But yes...I'm a left winger, leaning slightly towards some tendancies of socialism...although as far as crime and punishment go, you'll find I'm as right wing as it gets (shoot them all). The media, at the end of the day, are a bunch of manipulative scum bags, who will say and do anything to try and get a story out of it...I'm not so stupid that I didn't realise that myself wink2.gif

I respect your honest political views, Seraphina, and your right to express them freely. I won't get political myself, except to say I'm just about centre-right (though I agree with your views on criminals wink2.gif ).

And the papers are not really my concern. Each party has publications for and against.

It's the TV media that I have a problem with, because of the impact it has on people's decisions (and I'm not talking about people like us, who have a grasp of matters political. I'm talking about joe average in the street, who catches a few minutes of news each night). That impact can break a politician.

No unelected person should have the right to do that.

Mind you, short of lining up every crooked news editor and anchorman against a wall, and bringing in a firing squad, there's not much I can do about it. wink2.gif

That might actually be changing. I have read (If I can find the article I'll slap it up here) that the younger Jewish voters are switching to Republican. The reason for this is the Democrat's stance on the Isreal/Palestine conflict. Younger Jews are starting to realize that the Democratic party is definately Pro-Palestine and thusly are switching. Will be exciting here in 2004!

politics is the death of all things rational.

nothing will ever come of it but arguments and lying.

And one thing I never understood is all this "I vote Democrat..." "I vote republican...." crap. Just because someone has a certain party's logo under their name doesn't mean that they stand for the honest and pure ideals of each party. How come nobody is ever looked at for who they really are as an individual istead of what they SUPPOSEDLY stand for. And If I hear the terms 'conservative' and 'liberal' any more I'm going to scream. Why is it that all of human characterics can somehow neatly fit into these two apparently "magical" categories?

Until it all seems serious and not some overblown high school class president race for popularity and self gain, I'm going to continue to keep my nice little vote in my pocket until something comes along that's actually worth it.
