Its time for the Governator!

The Jewish, minority (mainly black), union labor and senior citizens usually vote Democrat.

That might actually be changing. I have read (If I can find the article I'll slap it up here) that the younger Jewish voters are switching to Republican. The reason for this is the Democrat's stance on the Isreal/Palestine conflict. Younger Jews are starting to realize that the Democratic party is definately Pro-Palestine and thusly are switching. Will be exciting here in 2004!

Found the link to the story about Jewish political support. You can read it here.

Sorry, I wasn't in junior high the day that joke was explained

Meanwhile, back to people who actually have a clue what I'm talking about...

What I would like to know, from both Seraphina and Cuff, is what was good/bad about Margeret Thatcher. Over here in the States, you heard very little about her. I only learned about her because at that time, my parents were very active in politics. But what are your personal views?

geez, where to begin...

Do I start with her reign of terror allowing nuclear waste to be shipped up to scotland "where it belongs", or the fact that she managed to set back women's position in british politics by decades...

Truth is, I was only a teeeny little peep when Thatcher was in power...but those who I know lived through her era of darkness lived through an age of mortage rates rising to 16%, she abolished the link between state pensions and earnings, destroyed trade unions, she introduced poll tax (which was basically a tax on being alive tongue.gif)...which was so bad it caused riots in the streets...

Crazy witch even did away with free milk for children in schools when she was the minister of education.

Her government also presided over a collapse of the manufacturing industry in this country, prefering instead to promote the service sector; i.e. we didn't make anything of our own, just importing and selling...which is crazy. Almost makes me wonder if her goal wasn't to lose the country as much money as she possibly could.

She also fought to reduce wages, arguing that we should be "like singapore"...a 'haven' off europe for cheap labour...

As someone once said, if you were having sex with Margarette Thatcher, you could actually be charged with 'having an offensive person on your weapon' tongue.gif

Nintendork, I'm confused with that comment that you made about Cufflink. I do know what "soccer moms" are and what they represent. I must be missing something here. What is the connection between them and Cufflinks remarks? Thanks.

Allow me to explain this 'soccer mom' conundrum

In white suburban middle class America, private school students, usually grades 1-4, are accompanied to their school soccer games by their SUV driving mothers. These mothers have the notorious characteristic of being complete and utter pains in the buttocks. They are notorious for....yelling loudly at games, putting down others in a way reminiscent of gradeschool, spending their accountant husband's money, driving HORRIBLY.....etc

I only know this because I grew up there sad.gif

Yes this is a drastic generalization and hardly fits in the context of this discussion, so I'm a little confused as well...

I would reply to Seraphina on her words about Thatcher, but...we have such differing views, (free country, why not), that we'll be trading blows for ever.

Thatcher did some bad things, and she treated the Scots appallingly, which is why she's about as popular up there as the Sars virus.

What her party did do is drag Britain out of the nightmare strike-ridden jurassic age of the seventies. Under labour we had mountains of rubbish on the streets (I remember dodging rats on the streets as a kid), and the dead lying unburied.

She dragged us kicking and screaming into the modern world, but speaking as a closet socialist, she hurt so many people in the process.

J6, Margaret Thatcher stirs such strong feelings in people in this country, that 50 replies from now, any argument will still be raging.

Views are very polarised, but that's what free speech is about. Personally, I'm going to sit in a bunker, about a mile away. Just knock loudly on the lead-lined door if you feel like joining me. wink2.gif

Here you go Pale_Horse:

Margaret Thatcher was the United Kingdom’s first woman prime minister. She came to office in May 1979 and remained until her resignation in November 1990, making her the longest continually serving prime minister in 150 year.

This seems like a pretty fair and balanced site:Margaret Thatcher

Thanks Dust19 that's a pretty accurate description. I could add a bit but it does stand firm as you wrote it. Thanks for the help.

I would still like to hear from Nintendork as to how that term applies to Cufflinks statements.

Thanks for the info everyone. An intersting read to say the least. Thanks for the link jp6p. Very interesting. A closet socialist Cufflink? Do I have to start looking for Reds under the bed again? tongue.gif

I always find it interesting that a person can be viewed so drastically different by two opposing political ideologies. Makes the world a spicy place to live! Here in the States one could say that Ronald Regan holds that distinction as well; vilified by the left and diefied (is that the right word?) by the right.

I suppose it's down to what an individual feels is best for their country...I myself think that it's a governments job to ensure quality of life for the population, nothing more, nothing less...I don't really care how they go about it.

However, leaving the country a financial ruin didn't really achieve that tongue.gif

For Cufflink, it seems to have worked...truth is, I've never heard of it being that bad only a few decades ago huh.gif Maybe scotland was just better off all round before the rise of the hell queen...

I will say this for them...the torries, right wing though they may have been, and lefty though I may be, probably wouldn't have allowed the assylum seeker situation to become as...insane...as it has now. Although who knows.

Every government has it's ups and downs...it's just up to an individual person to decide if the ups are worth the downs. Heck, I'm sure for some people, Thatcher was great...for me, she remains a troll cool.gif

BTW, round my neck of the woods, soccer moms are usually very attractive middle-aged women who drive SUV's. Cufflink, are you a very attractive middle-aged woman who drives a SUV? wink2.gif

Closet socialist?...well, on fairness for the little guy, yes. Conservative with a small `c', you might say.

But I'm with Seraphina when it comes to criminals. tongue.gif

hmmers....

I know it's not much to do with the starting topic, but since we do seem to have drifted into the area of politics, and since Cufflink seems to both know what he likes (and doesn't), just wondering how you feel about the asylum seeker's situation?

For that matter, anyone else who has a veiw on it? I was just talking to my brother last night about how so many people are allowed into the country without any formof background checks, and thanks to that there's a very good chance of a black market nuclear weapon being detonated in a major UK city sometime in the next couple of years.

This may trouble you, Seraphina, but we're completely together on this one.

And it's down to the Lib Dems screaming racism (with their chums in the media), every time anyone raises this very serious matter.

A policeman was murdered by a terrorist cell member in Manchester, earlier this year. All members of the cell were bogus asylum seekers. The following day in parliament, all decent MP's condemned the act. That a***hole, Kennedy, didn't even have the decency to show his face.

If we don't stop this soon, not only will it make people untrusting of our existing indigenous ethnic minorities (exploited by fascists like the BNP), but sooner or later, as you say, a lot of people will die horribly.

Okay, asylum seekers it is *cracks knuckles*...

Allow me to tell you a story...

Two young children come home from school, having been given the project of designing a poster for the christmas party. Without many ideas for what to do, they go and ask their father...he suggests that they make a poster with Santa on it...they reply:

"We're not allowed to do that dad. Our teacher says it's offensive to ethnic minorities."

The father, raising an eyebrow, then suggests they perhaps put a picture of a christmas tree instead...again, they reply:

"We're not allowed to do that dad. Our teacher says it's offensive to ethnic minorities."

...Sad as it is, this story is actually true, as recounted by an audiance member at a live TV debate about the asylum seeker situation. Now, am I the only one who is angered, sickened, and offended that we are actually stopped from practicing our own culture, and our own beliefes, because of people who fled their own, and don't want to live with the culture they moved into?

I'll be blunt...I don't like multiculturalism. I don't believe it's possible...the only results is the most uncompromising culture eventually overwrites the other. In this case, ours seems to be the one that's getting squashed. I don't honestly care whatever muslims, hindus, or anyone else does in their own home...but this is BRITAIN...they left their country for a reason (granted, most of them left because they knew they'd get social security and free housing here), they don't have a right to be here, they're here because the government is letting them...the very least they could do is accept that if they're moving to the UK, then they can respect the culture they're moving into.

I look in the streets of Glasgow, and there's barely a main street that doesn't have at least one homeless person...yet the government is doing absolutely nothing about them, instead finding a home for legions of asylum seekers being tossed our way from France and other nearby european countries...who the hell is 'torturing and persecuting them in France!?' The French are just a damn sight smarter about this than we are and won't accept them.

And now it's gotten to the stage where we're not even allowed christmas parties at school....so what's next? Are they next going to alter the school uniform, so that girls have to cover their heads so as 'not to offend muslim pupils'? Or perhaps the schools will stop serving lunch during ramadan, so our ethnic minorities won't feel left out while everyone else eats.

It's estimated that in five years, the number of asylum seekers in scotland will outnumber the number of actual scottish people...how long is it going to take the goverment to wise up and actually stop us being the laughing stock of Europe because of this!? I don't mind genuine asylum seekers recieving help...but I'm fed up of british people being treated as second class citizens after them!

It scares the living hell out of me that, when I send my children off to school, it might be off to seperate classes for each gender (so as not to offend our less enlightened brothers), or perhaps while someone up on a tower cries out over the city for everyone to come to the Mosk.

This is scotland...but the way things are going, imigrants are trying to turn it into their own little corner of wherever it is they came from...hey buddies, YOU came here for a reason, if you want to go back home, then go there. I want my children to be raised scottish, I want their children to be raised scottish, and I want this country to remain scotland...I don't want to think that the people coming after me are still going to have to be wandering around on egg shells incase they offend ethnic minoroties.

'Political correctness' has gotten absolutely insane...

*phews*...okay....rant over...*uncracks knuckles*

Seriously, you are one brave woman to speak with the voice of the silent majority. I agree completely with what you say, but alas, I suspect we'll both be on the receiving end of some abuse.

The price of free speech.

I submit myself to the jihad, and find comfort only in the fact that, if I am indeed gutted like a pig for what I said, I'll be proven right tongue.gif

I'm assuming, of course, the fact the jihad still exists doesn't prove me right in the first place.

In America if someone wants illegal aliens out of the country, they are right wing extremist conservatives.(RWEC) for short ok?

If we don't like political correctness, we are labeled RWEC's.

Those who want to teach the homeless how to build their own home, help them find work and feed themselves are RWEC's

Schools here give black minorities and Native Americans extra credits (points) to enter college. Not Asians or any other ethnic minority though. I think this is wrong.

In New York they opened a high school for gay kids only. I think this is wrong.

They give out advertise and display condoms in schools but you can't display any religious article on you or you could get suspended or expelled. I think this is wrong.

They teach safe sex, not abstinence, while teen age pregnancy is soaring, teen aids cases are soaring, teen abortion is soaring. Religion and any mention of God/Buddha/Jehovah/Allah etc. is strictly prohibited. I think this is wrong.

The Ten Commandments are being removed from public places by court order. I think this is wrong.

I am not a religious man but I do know if you tell a kid it's ok to screw they are going to screw but if you tell them it's not ok to screw and the risks involved there is a chance that some of them just may listen. This kind of thinking got me the tag of RWEC here in America and I wear it proudly.

What political party do I come closest to in Europe?

That's a doozy of a question, J6.

If we are talking in sweeping terms, that sounds like Conservative, but in reality, there are people in all parties who share your views.

I'm a moderate Tory, Seraphina's Scottish National Party (I think...pleeeease don't hit me if I got that wrong, Seraphina crying.gif ), and yet we share your views about the erosion of our culture, and the risks taken with our lives.
