Police sealed off U.S. Capitol Friday after reports of gunfire in House office building across street...

Smell of smoke in the lobby...

Blackberry message: This is a message from the U.S. Capitol Police

1. If you are in the Rayburn HOB then Shelter in Place. Quickly move into the nearest interior office space or interior hallway and away from windows. The Capitol Police are investigating reports of gunfire in the Rayburn HOB.

2. If nearby, grab Go-Kits and personal belongings.

3. Close doors behind you, but do not lock.

4. Remain calm.

5. Await further instructions. Do not leave the building.

I hope there wasn't any shots fired. It's not so interesting for the news then. :P Seriously, I hope no one was hurt.

Here's the CNN report: Link

Here's one quote that made me laugh:

"They said they heard gunfire in the Rayburn garage, but this is a huge building, I'm guessing it's a car backfiring or balloons popping," Gene Smith, chief of staff to Rep. Howard Berman, D-California, told The Associated Press. Berman has an office in Rayburn.

Balloons. :P

Silver Thong, Not an over-reaction. Please remember the gunman who shot and killed two Capital Policemen when he tried to shoot his way into the US Capital in 1998. The terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament Building about 5 years ago. That assult resulted in 9 or 13 people killed. And as a Canadian, you have to remember the guy with a weapon who siezed a chamber in the Canadian Parliament a few years ago. If the US police over-reacted, in Ottawa that day there were so many police and RCMP cars shown on the BBC coverage of the event, that they had to park them on top of each other.

Too many bad things have happened in legislative buildings not to act first. And it looked like the Capital Police did a good job. Investigated the report. Make a security check if a gunman got inside. Make sure it was a false alarm. And keep the people in the building informed.
