Evidence that huge, hollow ice towers exist on the surface of Mars?

user posted image

Dr Nick Hoffman a geologist at the University of Melbourne, believes he has found evidence from recent infra-red images of Mars that huge, hollow ice towers may exist on the surface of Mars and that if we are to find life on Mars, this is the place to begin that search.

There are similar hollow towers of ice on Ross Island, Antarctica. They are formed by steaming volcanic vents. Mt Erebus is an active volcano on Ross Island and weighs in at 3,800 meters tall. Steaming volcanic vents transform steam pouring out from deep within the Earth’s core directly into ice. The steam skips turning into liquid and jumps instead straight to ice. This results in the vapor constructing these strange chimneys of ice that can grow to over ten meters in high.

Inside the hollow chimneys there exists a unique microclimate that is maintained by the warming from the volcanic heat below. This means that while the internal temperature of the towers lingers around zero centigrade this is tens of degrees warmer than the air outside the towers. The ice inside the tower constantly melts and refreezes with fluctuations in the temperature.
