'One small step for man,' 700-box tape loss

Apprently NASA looses 700 boxes full tapes containing moon data. What are they hiding on these tapes? Here is the story on CNN. Can someome please tell me how anyone can manage to loose a national treasure ...

Either this is just another excuse not to release these tape (from fear of exposing things caught of these tapes NASA can't explaine - UFOs) or the tapes never existed in the first placed, ... or they were faked ... adding fuel to the conspiracy theory.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The U.S. government has misplaced the original recording of the first moon landing, including astronaut Neil Armstrong's famous "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," a NASA spokesman said on Monday.

Armstrong's famous space walk, seen by millions of viewers on July 20, 1969, is among transmissions that NASA has failed to turn up in a year of searching, spokesman Grey Hautaloma said.

"We haven't seen them for quite a while. We've been looking for over a year and they haven't turned up," Hautaloma said.

The tapes also contain data about the health of the astronauts and the condition of the spacecraft. In all, some 700 boxes of transmissions from the Apollo lunar missions are missing, he said.

"I wouldn't say we're worried -- we've got all the data. Everything on the tapes we have in one form or another," Hautaloma said.

NASA has retained copies of the television broadcasts and offers several clips on its Web site.

But those images are of lower quality than the originals stored on the missing magnetic tapes.

Because NASA's equipment was not compatible with TV technology of the day, the original transmissions had to be displayed on a monitor and re-shot by a TV camera for broadcast.

Hautaloma said it is possible the tapes will be unplayable even if they are found, because they have degraded significantly over the years -- a problem common to magnetic tape and other types of recordable media.

The material was held by the National Archives but returned to NASA sometime in the late 1970s, he said.

"We're looking for paperwork to see where they last were," he said.

I'm certainly not one to think they faked the whole thing...everything may not have worked out the way they planned so there may have been some faking or some editing.

My guess is they ran into some serious "Santa Clauses" up there and that changed everything.

Nasa and our govt. in general couldn't just come out and say "we're not going to build a moon station because they won't let us". Even our current pitiful excuses for investigative journalists would have enough sense to respond "can you be more specific about the THEY part?"

Another thought on this - if I look at things logically (kind of an Occam's razor approach) - I would come up with two conclusions:

1. We really did go to the moon during Apollo, too much evidence to deny it.

2. The 700 boxes of tapes were not really lost but are being suppressed due to something they don't want the public to learn from them.

Two, seemingly conflicting, conclusions. Therefore, there has to be some sort of a connector that would make it logical for the govt. to supress the tapes, even though the moon landings were real. Were we back in 1975 one could theorize that it was to protect a technology that we have and other countries don't - and there might be things they could learn from these tapes. But today? Technology has come way to far for that to be realistic.

Also, it has to be something that is a problem with all or most of the tapes (otherwise, let's say there is footage of a UFO on one or two of the tapes, they would just say that those particular ones were missing).... So what is the connector?

Just my theory :-)

The tapes just show clearer versions of what was already shown on TV in 1969 ie the first step and Apollo 11 EVA. When they were transmitted back to Earth they did not have a scan convertor available to transfer the 320 lines of resolution and 10 frames per second to something suitable for TV. That is why the networks had to film off of a video monitor that was displaying it. These are just the original tapes recorded directly from the downlink.

If it was part of some cover-up, why would they even announce it? How many people originally even knew about these tapes?

Whoops, someone called the common sense police!

Here's some more:

They lost the originals, but have copies. Do you people think NASA wouldn't think to make copies in the 37 years since it happened?

Probably due to multiple Foya requests...they didn'y lose them...they are hiding them.

So why? They sure as hell didn't just LOSE the tapes nor was Kennedy's brain get "lost"...this is a long standing approach to hiding info.

So if they did go to the moon (which I believe)...why the hiding?

There is a reason. What is it?

Even if NASA did make copies, why then is so much still classified. Come on 37 years later and most of the pics and footage is still locked away/lost. Damn and another 13 yrs till the freedom of information act makes them public. I'v seen how that works, 40 pages of blacked out lines. Something smells funny and we all know it. NASA is holding back no if ands or butts about it, and why????????

Exactly - they "lost" the originals due to many freedom of information act requests. They aren't 'lost" ...it's a scam. Let's not give our government too many nice words. It's not a "sealed bit of information"...its"a scam.

Organized crime.
