Working in the early 1930s, distinguished Austrian psychoanalyst and medical doctor Wilhelm Reich invented an apparatus known as the Orgone Box, or Orgone Accumulator. Its function was to absorb orgone (his word for life force energy) out of the atmosphere. The outer layers of the box were made of organic material (apparently wood) while the inner layers were made of metal. The organic material allegedly attracted and absorbed the orgone, while the metal conducted it, transferring it to the inside of the box, where it would then accumulate, ready to be absorbed by a human occupant.

Reich claimed that he could actually detect the accumulation of orgone within the box because the temperature inside the box became measurably warmer than the temperature in the outside room.

There are still great shrieking debates over the validity of Reich’s claims for the orgone accumulator. Or more accurately, there is a great deal of angry shrieking on the part of Reich’s supporters who claim to have duplicated some of his experiments with positive results, while there is an equal amount of snide derision and smug pronouncements of quackery on the part of mainstream scientists who – in typical form — simply can’t be bothered to investigate something that they already “know” is wrong.

In the meanwhile, to the outside observer two things do appear evident:

First, Reich really did believe he had discovered the phenomenon he called “orgone”. The strength of his own conviction in what he was doing is demonstrated by the fact that he willingly sought to face down the United States Government (when he could have simply skipped town), and even insisted the judge in his case read his books detailing his work, as he was completely certain that this would clear things up.

And second, whether Reich was right or wrong about the benefits of his box and the existence of orgone, he never really "proved" that his box was accumulating the stuff. One of his central proofs relied on the relative discharge rates of electroscopes positioned both inside and outside the orgone box. As Einstein himself tried to point out to Reich, these electroscopic experiments failed to eliminate other possible explanations for the resultant findings. (Reich should, for example, have compared his findings to readings taken within a closed, non-orgone absorbing box.) In other words, Reich might have been a brilliant theorist, but he was mediocre in the laboratory.

Although Wilhelm Reich could potentially have gone on to acknowledge and correct these errors, coming to sounder scientific conclusions about the accumulator and even orgone itself, he never had the opportunity. The government burned his books, papers, and equipment and threw him in prison. He died there in 1957.

Was there more to this that the (Austrian) government did not want known? All his work was destroyed, and he was tossed in jail, for what was apparently faulty scientific work. Did the government see some greater potential in this work that they did not want some crackpot, non-professional scientist pursuing publically?

I think Wilhelm Reich's biggest problem was that he was claiming orgone energy could do too much. He thought it could be used for everything from a miraculous medical cure, to weather control. His ultimate down fall came when he stated that it could be used to battle UFOs. The following is an excerpt from the link:

On January 28, 1954, Wilhelm Reich "happened accidentally to observe two bright yellow-orange lights moving in front of a mountain range toward a lake." The encounter was the opening salvo of a "war" with UFOs that would occupy the final phases of Reich's troubled medical and scientific career.

At the time, Reich, a trained psychoanalyst who had once belonged to Sigmund Freud's inner Vienna circle, was already facing what he called "emotional and physical misery" caused by his more terrestrial battle with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration over the use of "orgone," a controversial form of ambient "life energy" he claimed to have discovered.

Reich found an inexhaustible range of uses for his discovery, touting orgone as everything from the secret of antigravity to a tool for weather control, especially rainmaking. Most importantly, he found that he could use orgone to "interfere" with UFOs.

But to the FDA, orgone simply did not exist, rendering Reich's orgone-based therapies prosecutable under quackery statutes. Even today, four decades after the controversy, Reichian therapists claim to be able to manipulate the energy for a wide variety of healing effects, including the cure for cancer, without resorting to drugs, radiation or chemicals. Instead, Reichians work to build up a current of orgone within the patient's vicinity in order to strengthen and heal the underlying life force itself.

Nevertheless, Reich's legal fight with the FDA ended with his death in prison after defying a federal injunction against the use of orgone for medical purposes.

Whatever the official status of his medical theories, Reich expected a response when he wrote to the U.S. Air Force about his UFO sighting. He reasoned that "the U.S. Air Force is the natural organization in the Western world responsible" for dealing with such phenomena because "it operates in the atmosphere and watches the frontier upward toward outer space." When the military didn't deal with his report to his satisfaction, Reich took matters into his own hands.

Ok.. ok... I understand what the machine did.. I think, but what was its purpose then for the person seated inside it? To prolong life? Does the box still exist somewhere?

Yes the boxes still exist and you can get the plans online by typing in the word ORGONE.

One problem with the box is that it will begin to store up dead energy that can cause headaches, nausia and even death.

I personally make orgone devices. I create orgone generators. These devices emmit positive Orgone energy. You can feel it just by moving your hand a foot over it. People do claim to fight UFO and ALIENS using orgone. One thing is certain once you start making the devices strange things start happening. Recently my late night visitations from unwanted beings have resumed.

If you read up about orgone and the people involved I think you will find it very interesting. It's loaded with Government Conspiracies, Alien Attacks, UFO Blasting, Secret Underground Bases, and interdementional portals. If you want to see some crazy stuff, start building orgone generators.

I think Willy's biggest problem was that he was a nut. Simply because he was a psychoanalyst doesn't mean he's immune from going crazy.

If his box did any of the things he claimed it would do then his supporters today would be able to show it's effectiveness. They can't do that because it doesn't do anything, except maybe cause claustrophobia in some people who might sit in it.
