Fred Thompson Considers 2008 Run

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Fred Thompson thinks there isn't enough "star" power in the GOP presidential field, so the professional actor and former Tennessee senator is considering getting into the 2008 race.

Thompson, who plays district attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's drama "Law & Order," said Sunday that he's going to "leave the door open" and make a decision in the coming months.

"I'm going to wait and see what happens," Thompson said. "I want to see my colleagues on the campaign trial, what they say, what they emphasize, whether they can carry the ball next November."

"I think people are somewhat disillusioned. A lot of people are cynical out there. They're looking for something different," he said.

Thompson, 64, said he was pondering a run after former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker and other Tennessee Republicans began drumming up support for his possible GOP candidacy, citing his conservative credentials.

On the issues, Thompson said he's "pro-life," and believes federal judges should overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision as "bad law and bad medical science."

_Opposes gay marriage, but would let states decide whether to allow civil unions. "Marriage is between a man and a woman, and judges shouldn't be allowed to change that."

_Opposes gun control, and praised last week's 2-1 federal appeals decision overturning a long-standing handgun ban. "The court basically said the Constitution means what it says."

_Supports President Bush's decision to increase troops in Iraq. "Wars are full of mistakes. You rectify them. I think we are doing that now," he said. "We've got to give it a chance to work."

_Would pardon former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice now, rather than waiting until all his appeals are exhausted.

Libby is "bearing the political brunt of something that should've never come about," Thompson said, noting that "practically every witness at trial had inconsistent statements."

Thompson said he was not setting a deadline to make a decision and believes he won't be at a disadvantage if he waited until summer. "The lay of the land will be different in a couple of months than it is today, one way or another," he said.

Thompson, the minority counsel in the Watergate investigation, was elected to the Senate in 1994 to fill the unexpired term of Vice President Al Gore. He was chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee and left the Senate in 2003 to resume his acting career.

Thompson has acted in films such as "The Hunt for Red October," "Cape Fear," and "In the Line of Fire." He was interviewed on "Fox News Sunday."

Now if he could add Sam Nunn as his running mate; that would be the ticket.

I'm from Tennessee and I can tell you now, Fred is one mean SOB..(Maybe not as mean as Guiliani, but then again, that would take some doing. Rudy's a piece of work..)

If they could find a happy medium between the two on abortion, could you imagine the ticket??? Guilani/Thompson or the other way around? Wow..(Tear's of hopeful joy run down Pinky's face...)

Besides being a Supreme court attorney, US Senator, author and scholar.

He's a terrorist's nightmare....

Ahmadinezad needs to be praying hard to allah (or whoever) that this guy doesn't get elected...Really hard. :tu:

We've been trying to do that since before WWI.

I think it would be awesome. Blame america... oops, gotta find a new scapegoat to blame. Natural disaster... oops again. Famine, oops yet again. New disease running rampant... so sorry. Getting your can kicked by a more powerful oppressor, dont call us.

Nope, no trade, nothing. Stay over there and leave everyone else alone. Go back to the 1920s. If America's gonna have that attitude then the rest of the world doesn't need them.

UPDATED: 6:30 pm CDT June 24, 2007

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Channel 4 News Nationwide Exclusive

Fred Thompson is set to announce that Nashville will be the home of his national campaign headquarters, WSMV is reporting.

A source close to the campaign planning tells WSMV that that Thompson planned to announce his candidacy on the steps of the historic Fall School Building Tuesday, but Thompson campaign officials deny that Tuesday's announcement is an official run for the White House.

The source tells WSMV report says that the Thompson campaign has obtained the lease for that building to turn it into a national campaign office.

"Everything's in place for Tuesday," the source told WSMV. "There are three major events built around his announcement." But Bob Davis, the Tennessee Republican Party Chairman, and Thompson's former Chief of Staff says "There will not be an annoucement Tuesday." Link
