Owlscrying Posted March 23, 2007 #1 Share Posted March 23, 2007 Mar. 21 ROME - A huge column in the garden of an ancient Roman villa at Pompeii was toppled in what officials said Wednesday was an act of vandalism. "This isn't a simple act of vandalism, which, while bad enough, could be explained by ignorance," superintendent Giovanni Guzzo said, calling it "an act of intimidation." Spokeswoman Francesca de Lucia said the sheer force needed to topple the large column, which broke into at least five large pieces, suggested that the perpetrators were trying to make a statement. Authorities were investigating possible motives, including disgruntled employees, but had not ruled out an accidental cause despite the effort needed to make the column fall, she said. The damage was discovered Monday. Officials at Pompeii believe the vandals broke into the closed excavation of the villa over the weekend and apparently climbed up scaffolding to push over the column from above. Experts who examined the column said it can be restored and put back into its proper place, the statement said. The ancient city of Pompeii was buried by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 go
nativechick1989 Posted March 23, 2007 #2 Share Posted March 23, 2007 Terrible .... Something like that happen with a natural rock formation called "The Eye Of The Needle" on the Missouri River....the formation was oval in shape and resembled that of a needle. Vandals broke off the top portion of the Needle, leaving only the sides....it was a sad sight....being that it was a tourist attraction and natural wonder. Little Odo Posted March 31, 2007 #3 Share Posted March 31, 2007 Although this is a very sad occurrence, I hope there was a 'natural' reason for its toppling. If it was a 'man-made' accident then I am truly appalled that people can do this. Ignorance is not the word I'd use to describe people who desecrate ancient, irreplaceable artifacts. Aztec Warrior Posted March 31, 2007 #4 Share Posted March 31, 2007 I hate vandalism, usually perpartated by youths or drunks or both. I also hate graffiti. I wonder how heavy the column was, and how many people it would require to topple, if that was indeed the cause. And exactly what kind of statement would they be trying to make?
