Tiny terrier saved kids from pit bulls

POSTED: 3:59 p.m. EDT, May 2, 2007

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday.

George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.

"George was brave -- he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.

"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."

One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl.

"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him -- one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."

But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.

South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack.

In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.

 Poor Dog...what a hero though! Brave dog.

I want to know who the dirty scum are, who owned two pitbulls and let them out! I thought New Zealand was supposed to be cool.

The dog died a hero. Some dogs might have run off at the sight of those two large and vicious dogs.

Poor little terrier :(

I think that the pit bulls should be destroyed without fail (I don't know why they say "they are likely to be put down" - the word likely shouldn't even be in the equation!. They tried to attack kids before the Jack Russell intervened anyway.

What is it with people that keep dogs that are so vicious, where were the owners whilst this attack was going on. They should be prosecuted too!!

Mmmh after some research.. I've found out the maoris are into drugs/drug dealing and own pitbulls.

I bet the pitbulls were owned by a maori trying to be a new york gangsta.

The high proportion of offending by Maori is rated "a significant concern" by the Ministry of Justice.

It noted in its annual report today that though Maori form just 14.5 per cent of New Zealand's population, half the prison population and 45 per cent of offenders serving community-based sentences identify themselves as Maori.

The ministry said it was working with communities and iwi on initiatives to reduce Maori offending.

by nature pitt bulls are animal agressive not human agressive ,,human agression is a learned trait thats why pitt bulls are not used for police dogs or militery dogs by nature they are not human agressive,,,,more then likely the little dog was what the pitt bulls were after the entire time,,,not the children..those dogs have the abilty to kill that little dog and maul those kids with no problem...they were showing their dominece towards the little dog and he didnt back down and the pitts did what is in their nature,,they will never back down from a fight from any animal...so this is just some more anti pitt bull propaganda...

before you try to flame me i know the reputation of these animals and what can happen in the hands of a bad owner or breeders i am not saying children or people havent been mauled by one of these dogs...but 9 times out of 10 it was the owners teaching the dog to act a certain way....these dogs can cause major damage but its not in their nature to do it against people..do some research not buy into the media blits against them..more the owners..even dog fighters dont want a human agressive dog because they are harder to train

Never liked pitbulls anyway. I don't understand why people keep having them since they seem to have so many personality disorders. I mean I believe they CAN be trained to be very good dogs, but from what I've heard it's not easy to do so. Plus I think they're ugly. There are so many dogs that easier to handle and better tempered by nature; why get a pitbull? In my opinion all aggressive dogs should be put down, or if deemed possible, trained to become "good" dogs.

the real tragety is not that one brave dog is dieing but that one brave dog is dieing and two dogs who are the result of poor ownership are dieing too pitbulls can be the sweetest dfos in the world it depends on the owner and this one aparently did not socialise them properly and allowed them to run loose its a shame three dogs die becuase one person cant be responsible

Remember, both Jack Russels and Staffies (pit bulls) are terriers. Both are aggressive, spunky and smart and acs.rudeboy is correct. Both are animal agressive (which is why pit bulls are used horribly for dog fighting) they're also quite territorial of what they perceive to be theirs, including their humans.

I will agree with acs.rudeboy on this one. Both Staffies and Jr's have STRONG prey drives as well, it's likely the Staffies were more interested in the Jack rather than the children.

That being said, Staffies when raised correctly, and given a lot of positive mental and physical stimulation can be the best dogs you've ever owned (they're scary smart, most terriers are). Saddly, many owners don't raise them correctly.

I bet the police will not do anything, why? because it was just a dog which died, not a children. :(

If the two pittbull killed one of them the police could investigate and arrest the owner of the dogs.

Is this kind of police system that I hate so much, and its so stupid.A dog which died like Hero deserves a vengeance, and the victim could be the owner of the two pittbulls,I could kill him/her.People of the zone could unite and give him a good lesson.

In this case I prefered that a children had died just for the police investigate and arrest the owner.

just out of curiosity, are you ABSOLUTELY sure that the dogs were pit bulls? I own 2 and I'm constantly keeping my ears open for stories of pit bull violence. Alot of the time the dogs in the news arn't pit bulls at all, people just jump to that conclusion being that they are probably the #1 feared dog in the world. Anyways I think it depends on the owner of the dog ultimately. Neglectful/abusive owner=vicious dog IMO

for one they are gonna put the 2 dogs down..they kill the dogs no matter if they attack humans or other animals,,and the owners of the pittbulls will be held liable for the death of the dog..but for you to say you wish a child was killed so the owners could be punished has got to be the most assinine statment of the year...for one what if they did everything right rasing these dogs and they just happen to get out,,and they came up to play with the kids and the jack russle took offence and started the fight,,the 2 pitts were just doing what dogs do..but everyone is so quick to jump on the killing them bandwagon....and we can never get the entire story because of the breed people all ready have their mind made up..

wtf...because they owned 2 pittbulls they are scum and deserve to die?? are you kidding me.. 3 dogs got into a fight..,and the dogs will be put down but who are you to say the owners are scum,...read the article it says nothing about previouse complaints about aggressive dogs or prior attacks...or that the owners neglected the dogs. they attacked another animal not the children,,the owners didnt sick the dogs on the kids or the dog,,so how can you say they deserve to die,,,where on this green earth do you find anything to justify your comment

Any kind of dog will fight to defend it's 'supposed territory'. If chihuahuas were larger they would be ranked right up there with pits.

That being said, a dog should be under the owners control, at all times...if they aren't they should be relocated to a more responsible owner if at all possible.

I think this is a very good comment. I was gonna say this myself; one shouldn't let dogs roam free, and the larger/potentially more dangerous the dog, the more careful the owner should be. Sure, pitbulls can probably raised to be very sweet dogs (despite their look which I don't find appealing) but so can any other dog, such as retrievers or german shepherds.

I agree with a.s.crudeboy's comments. It's the owners who create vicious animals like these being reported on.

Pit bulls are not ugly, either IMHO:

I think Pit Bulls can definitely be very sweet, as all the bully breeds can be. I don't think I'd ever own one, personally, but I've encountered some very sweet and also some aggressive Pit Bulls... it definitely depends on the owner and the genetics of the dog.
